You will get lots of different opinions but I would go with what the factory recommends 5w-30 mobile 1 unless you dont have the stock short block then a thicker oil may be needed.

Any good premium full synthetic, but do NOT run a heavy weight as the bearing clearances are to tight for much more than 10/30.
I cant bring myself to use RP after having it blow up so many motors back in the drag days when we had to run it as they were the title sponsor....but it seems much improved since then. Anything from M1/castrol/QS/Pennzoil to some of the best, Amsoil, Swepco, etc. |

Has anyone tried Scaffer's ? We used this on diesels with oil fired injection, the oil side pressure was over 3000psi on acceleration and this oil was one of the only oils not to shear and airate in the system. Just curious if anyone uses it.

In a warm climate I'd go wtih 10w30 of your favorite synthetic.
Your oil pressure and oil temp gauges will tell you if you have the right stuff in there. No problems such as excessive oil temps... and there would be no reason to change. If you went racing with race spec clearances, 15w50 would be a good choice. But not the greatest for cold starts on a mass produced daily driver. Even the ZR1 Vette uses 5w30. |

One of the few areas we disagree (98% of the time we are on the same page and have a ton of respect for both).....and I build motors steady, and have for over 38 years....we have owned, raced, crewed, managed professional race teams for a good amount of my life....we have numerous Divisionl, National, and World championships in several classes both NHRA & IHRA and push our race motors beyond imagination.....and with these rod and main clearances that heavy of weight will work, but is not ideal. On our race motors we go app 1/2 thou looser and always run 15/50 due to this. You wont wreck your motor running 15/50 but the shear is a power robber and protection slightly less in relation to the flow through the bearings/journals. Just an observation from over 38 years of seeing evrything you coild imagine in most every type of motor. |

I've been running 15/50 in my cars since the late 90s. Main reason being is that our summer months in central FL (which is like four to six months) have very brutal, hot weather. This means thinner oils like 5/30 or 10/30 almost turn in to water when it gets hot.
15/50 doesn't turn "watery" nowhere near as fast in hotter weather.
