Pinion nut tourque numbers?
Does anyone know the tourque numbers on the pinion nut for a 10 camaro ssrs. I searched alldata and the forum but couldnt find anything. I even called the dealer but all the info they had was the size of the nut.

Its not necessarily a torque spec per say, its a rotational torque spec, if that makes any sense
Your essentially measuring the amount of torque it will take to turn the entire pinion assembly, the tighter the pinion nut, the more you collapse your collapsible sleeve, thus raising your rotational torque value. You'll check it with a small inch pound dial indicator style torque wrench while turning the pinion nut in the housing. Someone who actually had a camaro diff apart can chime in to explain or confirm my explanation.

Eric is correct, GM specs call for pinion pre-load, that is the amount or torque that is required to turn the pinion fully installed.
The manual calls for 18-27 inches of preload on the pinion, for the V8 differential. Buy a inch pound wrench. Make sure the bearing and gears are fully seated, and lightly lubricate before you check. |

Oh and I forgot to mention,
If you go over spec for you pinion preload, you cant just back off the nut and call it a day, you need to remove the yoke and install a new collapsible sleeve an start over.

Remember to not use a click type torque wrench to measure preload. Turn the pinion at a constant speed, that is pinion bearing preload. The reading on the torque wrench will be a little higher just before the pinion starts to turn, don't worry about that.

Brining up an old thread. I'm about to remove my yoke to replace it, so I need to remove the pinion bolt. Does this mean I need to purchase a new collapsible sleeve for it as well when installing the new yoke?
