Portable Hard Drive?

Now that Camaros no longer take CDs I'm wondering if I could copy all my CDs to a portable hard drive.

The MyLink manual specifically says "no." However I'm thinking if I can find one powered by USB that meets the "USB Mass Storage Class specification" it might work. How would the car know the difference between a hard drive and a flash drive?

Has anyone tried?

Before everyone tells me to use a thumbdrive, I would like to use the hard drive because I figure it can hold 2,000 CDs or more (1TB). I don't believe thumb drive capacity is there yet. This way I can have one device with all my music.

It didn't work on the 2010/2011/2012 PDIM so I doubt it's going to work on 2013.

But hey, never hurts to try. Let us know if it works

Just get an Ipod and put your music on that.

I'll try this weekend if no one tells me they already have and it didn't work.

I might consider another iPod. (I have a 30GB one and it's full.) But they're $249 and 160 GB. For $89 I can get a portable drive with a TB.

I too am betting it won't work. From what I've seen with all car receivers, both factory and aftermarket, they are limited with the size of storage device they work with. As Stephens mentioned, an iPod may be your best bet even though it's not as cost effective as a hard drive. Good luck, let us know!

Well, I'm sad to report that it doesn't work. I connected a G Drive 1TB mobile USB portable drive for Apple laptops and the car didn't recognize the drive. As a test I connected a Lexar 8GB thumb drive with the same data (and more) and it worked fine.

Oh, well, at least I have a new backup drive for my Mac. Looks like I'll have to get a 160GB iPod after all.

I have a 240GB iPod. Made it myself, you can Google it.

It works in the car.

128 GB Flash Drives for under $90:

You could also organize your music on 2-3 of these. Why do you need it all on one?

You're right; I don't need it all on one device. I just thought it would be convenient. Those might just be the way to go.

The problem with a flash drive, vs an iPod, is the fact that the radio has to re-index the drive every time you remove it.

This is true, which is why I have mine on a flash drive, and I leave it in the car and plugged in, "piece of cake"
