I am planning on going to Illinois mid December to visit family and go to the Bears game. I've have never driven in Illinois type weather before. I've lived in FL whole life and driven as far as NC. Any tips or things I should prep the car with when I head to IL.

Find a safe place to park it for a few days in Florida and rent a car for the trip. Like Comrando said, cold temperatures and summer tires don't mix, even if you aren't unlucky enough to actually hit snow. People up north with cars like these that come with summer tires either store them in the winter, or have a 2nd set of rims/tires for the winter.

The average is below freezing in and around ALL Great Lake states in December.

Ive done many trips 1000 plus miles in my car. Including my move from Columbus, Ohio to lakeland, FL without hesitation. That being said I have all season tires on. Honestly I would not take those pirelli tires anywhere near chicago in december. They are not rated for that temp, and if it snows you are SOL my friend. just my 2cents.

And it's not just the performance of YOUR tires in the snow that you have to worry about, it's all the other idiot drivers too - you don't want to risk hurting your car because there's some other Floridian who has never driven in the snow slip sliding all over the road next to you. Keep your baby safe, leave it at home.

I bought my car in the tail end of winter last year, and drove it through the remainder of the wyoming winter. The only reason i was the slightest bit comfortable was due to the fact of me living in michigan my whole life and was very used to driving in the slick conditions. Just to give you an idea.... 1/2 inch of snow = no forward momentum when you relese the clutch....seriously the car just sits there!

I have to agree with the others. If you aren't used to winter driving, a Camaro with P-Zero's isn't the way you want to learn. Rent a vehicle, and leave your Camaro safe at home.

Your gonna need some all season tires at the least. Cold weather and summer tires is a recipe for disaster

I grew up driving the Chicago area. As much as you'd like to have your car up there on this trip, mid-December is no time to tempt the Snow Gods. For the cost of prepping your car (snow tires you'll never use again, winterizing), you could rent a nice (meaning practical) car that's prepped and ready for the nastiness.
There's always the off-chance you'll make the trip and never see snow, but even the bitter cold off the lake will have an effect on your cars performance and safety.

Good luck and have a safe trip. I'm waiting 'til the Bears come down here 23 Dec to see them (hope it's not too hot that day...)

I have to agree with the others. I wouldn't want a Camaro on summer tires anywhere near Chicago in December. That goes double if you have no winter driving experience.

If you had your heart set on a road trip in your Camaro, you could drive part way and stash it in an airport parking garage before continuing on in a rental car. I'd say in mid December it would definitely be safe to drive as far as Nashville, or Louisville. If you get that far and the weather forecast for Chicago looks warm and free of snow it might be safe to go all the way.

i am from cleveland ohio... yes the S**t hole of american... minus detroit... and i am telling you the p zeros and anything reltively cold (below 40) is a no go... even if you have dry conditions the traction is still bad... just like everyone else said if you can afford leave the camaro at home
