L99 Transmission Sticks In First

Hi Everyone,

I have had my 2011 6.2L L99 transmission stick in first gear about five times since I bought the car about 18 months ago. 4 of the 5 times it occurred after starting it and driving from the house in the morning. (I live in AZ so it doesn't get cold here.) It will stay stuck in first until I pull over, shift to neutral, then shift back into drive. Then all is ok.

Last week on the way to drop off the car at the dealer for an oil change and top inspection (yes, it's a vert), I was driving in 3rd or so at about 25 mph when it shifted down to first and stuck there. That was really weird (and scary). Again, I pulled off, sifted to neutral, back to first and all was ok.

I reported this to the dealer. They ran all the diagnostics and found nothing. They also said they checked with Chevy if the issue has ever been seen. Again, nothing. They couldn't get it to repeat.

I think the next time it happens, I will leave it alone and drive to the dealer (slowly) just so they can witness it. But in the meantime, has anyone ever seen this?

Thanks

Chris

NO, However I have noticed that there is a little "hiccup" or slip when it shifts into 2nd.. Almost like it sticks for a brief moment, however my research has shown this transition from 1st to 2nd commonplace. Too bad the dealership couldn't get the problem to repeat while you were there. Hopefully there are no serious problems.

Do you have any aftermarket shifters? Cus when I bought my hurst paddle shifters I put the downshift on a little to tight and it would downshift on it's own. It took me a few days to notice and it kept on scaring the crap out of me ...and if you have the stock ones I would just sit there for about 10 minutes and just keep tapping the down shift from different angles to see if it gets stuck.

On the interstates @ 60-75 mph in "D", if I slow down or stop for any reason and then speed back up, my L99 SS will stay in 5th gear and not upshift back into 6th gear. I must then put it in "S" and then manually upshift.
I've had the car to 2 dealers but they can't duplicate the problem or show any problem on the cars computer,
so they say there's nothing they can do.

I think that this is your answer. The dealer is not going to take it seriously until you prove to them that it's really happening. Maybe they can hook up a scan tool and figure out exactly what's happening, if they catch it in the act. I think I'd pull up in front of the dealer, leave it running, in gear and set the parking brake. I'd be afraid that shutting it off or shifting gears would take it out it's failing mode.

Brandon, see my post #4.
I guess GM is only interested in L99 transmissions that get stuck in 1st gear, not 5th.

Good question on the mileage. The vehicle is at 18,995. Other than the top, I've have very few things go wrong. And about the transition, I feel it shifts very smoothly. I'm thinking that some sensor is dirty - or somehow it's getting a signal that the car is in manual when it is not.

Have you been to the dealership to get the concern addressed? Please let us know. If so, I can set up a case for you as well. I will just need your first and last name, address, phone number, VIN, mileage and involved dealership name.

Beautiful car Chris. Just to be clear you're sure you are in Drive and not Sport or Manual mode? In either of the latter modes, the car will hold each gear to red line until you change it. Also as someone else said, make sure the button on the back of the steering wheel, left hand side, isn't getting stuck somehow. Those buttons are easy to pop off. Perhaps the foam got bunched up inside and is tripping the downshift button??

Thank you. I really do love it. It is very comfortable, smooth and just looks good. I still get people yelling out the windows as I drive by. I've never had that happen in any car I have had. I know this is off topic but the only thing I would think about doing to it is supercharging. I'd like to have a bit more power (if you can believe it.)

The next time it happens, i will check all the things you mentioned. However, my heads up says 'S' when I leave it in that mode. And you know what? It shifts anyway! And when in drive, the paddles still work. I really don't know the difference. The button is to disengage for movement. It doesn't feel abnormal but I'll check that too.

Thanks for the reply. Here's another pic. Red Jewel - we may never see it again.

Brandon, I just returned from a 1,000 mile trip in my SS. The problem with my transmission is getting worse. Again, when I slow down from 70-75 and then speed up again the car stays in 5th gear.
I've had the car to two Chevrolet dealers who advised there's nothing they can do unless they
can duplicate the condition as nothing shows on the shops computer. Neither one could.

A case number was set up plus the above info supplied already.
It's upsetting to me that GM cannot correct this problem on my Camaro.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Keith,

Since there is already a case set up for this, I would highly suggest working with the current agent you are assigned to. They are in the best position to assist you with your case and just let me know how everything goes. We apologize for the inconvenience!

Brandon,
I went to Boston and back over the weekend and again my Camaro sticks in fifth gear after
slowing down on the interstates.
I am not lying about this and I find it hard to believe GM will not try to correct the problem for me.
There can be only one or two causes for this imo so can't something be tried ?
Again, this only occures when after driving an hour or two on the highway, so I don't see
how I can take a dealer's tech on such a trip to try to duplicate the problem.
Please review my two prior posts on this (above) and try to help me.
Thanks,
Keith.
