30,000 mile maintenance
So I start setting up to do my oil change today and decided to give the dealership a call and ask if there's anything special to do at 30k.
Evidently, there is. It'll run me close to $400 and it includes flushing the rear differential, taking fuel system apart and cleaning it, clean/lube/inspect calipers, rotate tires and finally air filter change. Is this worth it? I'm thinking maybe it is, at least for the paper trail... but I wasn't counting on dropping $400 on the car right now - at least not until I buy tires.

Flushing the rear diff? I would just change it myself.
Taking apart the fuel system and cleaning injectors? At 30,000 miles? I really question this one. Rotate Tires? I thought the back tires were larger then the front? Mine are, you can't rotate them. Maybe I am wrong here.

see that's why I ask... I'm hoping more people will chime in. The key elements are the brakes, diff and fuel system - I could do it all, but it would be a hassle. Might be nice to have the paperwork as well...

I just have the dealership do the stuff that is needed. Somethings I've asked about, they've said not yet. I know having them do the maintence is a bit more costly but it is insurance to me. They cut me price breaks and have done warranty repairs like replacing the valley cover and a valve spring without questioning the headers and other things they could see.
I'm at 46k miles, have had the oil changed every 5k, the transmission, differential, cluth/brake fluid, all changed and the radiator flushed all at my request. They saw my catch can and said, I don't guess you need a top engine clean. Nothing else has been recommened.

I agree with changing the reard diff fluid. Super easy. Sounds like a lot of money for something that can be done mostly by yourself. |

Rotating the tires is a non-issue. I'm replacing the tires soon.
My real question is are these service items really necessary? I am no stranger to doing the work myself, I just want to know mostly is it needed at this point. Having the dealer do it comes down to convenience. If I don't have the dealer do this, could it be a warranty issue down the road? I'm still covered a good while. Speaking of warranty they're actually fixing an oil leak on the front engine cover near the alternator. They're waiting for parts to do it... |

You have a K and N filter. Clean and re-oil at 50,000 miles. The recharger kit costs twelve bucks. Cleaning the fuel injection is worthless. Changing the differential fluid is a good idea. Save the money and do it yourself. Checking the calipers is also worthless. Check the brake pads yourself.

Diff oil change is easier and cheaper than even an engine oil change. Unscrew 2 plugs, wait for it to drain, put bottom plug in, insert one bottle of oil, insert plug and done. That's $20 oil and 20 minutes time if the car isn't already in the air. Caliper check is a joke, lube is to prevent squeaking but if your brakes squeak they will cover under warranty anyways. If they don't squeak no harm done and leave em. Fuel system cleaning? That's a joke too. If you have the same wheels as SS you can't do a true rotation anyways, only side to side but that's a waste too. Oil filter clean is a great idea but requires nothing more than a little time a cleaning kit and probably just a flat headed screw driver.
If you really want all that done, take it to me I'll do it for $150 :P

Oil change in the rear diff is a must. If you don't have a catch can I highly recommend doing a top engine clean (fuel system clean from some dealers). These engines pick up a lot of oil from pcv making the throttle plate, intake, valves etc. very dirty. Don't due the brake thing. The tech should check you pads for you for free as up sales give good commission. After you get new tires you should rotate your tires if you do NOT have a RS. RS package comes with 8" front and 9" rear wheels and do not get rotated.

Bottle of Fuel injector cleaner in the tank every 6 mo. and your good to go. Changing the differential is super easy. Just remove the plugs. Sounds like a dealer money maker. Mine wanted to change all fluids at 30k. when I told them they are synthetics they shut right up. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
