Buying and Selling

Did a quick search for this subject and didn't find anything. My question is for those of you who have bought and/or sold items to/from individuals in a private sale. How did you structure the deal? All up front? Half at shipment then half receiving? for example. Of course I am referring to the more expensive items.

through Paypal, which goes through my credit card. its guaranteed then. I don't do the gift though, if they don't want to pay the 3 % and I think its worth the extra Ill add 3% to my payment. So I pay all up front.

I always require full up front.

The only exception is if it's over $500 for something I am making, and won't have completed for a few weeks. In that case, I only ask for the cost of materials up front, and the rest before I ship. That way if they back out I get the materials for free, and they aren't out full price until closer to getting the product.

Check to see how long they have been a member and how active they are. I have had nothing but good results. I always pay up front. I have sent items twice with deferred payment but only to established and respected members. Paypal.

All up front. Agree to the price via PM. Make sure you have the sale. Exchange paypal/shipping info. Wait for payment to show up in Paypal. Ship promptly, always keeping quick communication. You won't have any problems that can't be worked out. You've always got The Stig if sheet hits the fan

And PLEASE use the itrader system. I feel like it is under-utilized.

Every member I've ever bought from on here has been great. 9/10, the community will tear someone apart that doesn't look trustworthy before you even read the thread.

What about something like wheels,sc,etc. Would not be comfortable sending thousands upfront. What about sending shipping $,then half when receiving a trk#,balance when receiving item? Trust/risk goes both ways.

In my opinion, if you're not comfortable enough with the purchase to send the whole amount, then you shouldn't buy it in the first place. If that's the case, buy brand new from a vendor. In the case of a private party transaction, the seller should provide adequate pictures and a honest description for you to evaluate the item and determine its condition. If that's not what you receive then you should be able to work out some sort of deal, or return of purchase with the seller. PayPal is a good form of protection in case of a bad transaction, but I've never had to use it on Camaro5, good bunch of folks around here....for the most part!!!

Just remember "buyer beware" sellers too!

Before a transaction I check the seller's post count. If they're brand new I am obviously a little bit more cautious. Also, you can check their iTrader rating by clicking on their user profile.

I also use paypal exclusively unless I am able to meet with the buyer/seller in person. As mentioned before, it gives BOTH of you a security measure if things don't go quite right.

So far, every item that I've purchased from forum members has required full payment up front.
