Finished engine cover
Iwant to thank the other forum members who shared their great pics of their customized engine covers. I especially liked the cutouts. You inspired me to create one of my own. I did not want to mess with my stock cover so I bought a used one on Ebay for $50. Had a couple of scrathches but Idid not care since I knew Iwould be sanding the whole piece down. Basically I cutout the top pieces first and began sanding. I applied 4 coats of black sandable primer, two coats of gray filler primer, 5 basecoats and 4 clear topcoats. I ordered the SS emblem from Josh at RPI Designs. My car is CGM and Icould not find any gray sprays Iliked soI went with Duplicolor Perfect Match black universal metallic. It actually has a gray hew to it. My car looks black insome lights. I could have left them alone but I painted the top and sides with a Chrysler black pearl. I added flames that I bought from my local hobby store and embossed them into the paint - kind of stealth like.
This was a fun project. I will use the stock cover for just driving around and the custom one for shows. |

Thanks for kind words...Yes lots of rattle cans...the trick to applying a good rattle can job is to sand the heck out of the item you are painting, apply multiple coats of thin layers building on each one...that gray filler primer was awesome.
I used 180, 350, 400 and 800 grits of sandpaper. The members who posted their pics got me interested in trying this. I just copied off your paper with a few twists of my own |
