So I cut my filter open...

588 miles of pretty stout break-in miles before the bad weather ended my fun for the year. I changed the oil and filter and cut the filter open with a tool I borrowed from my neighbor. Nothing big in the can. Nothing came out of the pleats with a magnet. When I cut the element out and spread it out however HOLY COW! It makes me wish I never looked. It not like I found a valve spring retainer or anything but there are a lot of little bits and shavings. I'll try to get a pic in the morning but what's normal for a new motor?

I got a juiced up 95" twin cam in my Harley. I ride it pretty hard. 20000 miles or so on the build. I cut that filter open for comparison. Nothing. The filter looked better than the AC though...

So? What say you experienced engine guys? Normal for a break-in filter? I'm guessing so. (Hoping)

Yep, normal. The filter is doing its job.

Thanks. I feel better after seeing the other guys pics posted right after I had my thread started. My pieces look very similar. I would have thought they would subside after awhile. Was that 7500 miles example his first oil change or can you find this much crap in the filter from a seasoned engine?

Typically you might find stuff like that in the first and possibly the second change. Not typical after that.

After that you are going to see tiny glitter like flakes from normal engine wear. For the first few you are going to get metal bits from machining/assembly and break in that are finally washing through the engine.

This is bad:

Bad after the engine is well seasoned? I have pieces in the first filter that resemble those.
