Loud vacuum sound from catch can install
Hey guys,
I'm not sure if this is really a problem or not, just needing some "piece of mind" I installed my elite catch can and have out about 1000 miles on it. The other day I opened the hood to help someone jump start their car and could hear a really loud vacuum sound. I traced it to the catch can tubing. I didn't find any leaks but it just sounded like a abnormally loud vacuum sound. Is this normal? -Ben |

Probably normal.
The input tube does produce flow noise. Are you running with the standard PCV barb or an enlarged one? The enlarged PCV barb makes the input hose sound even louder.

My Mike Norris can did that after I drained it the first time and discovered two days later that I had turned the drain valve the wrong way when finished and it was full open instead of full closed.
The vacuum was so strong it about sucked my finger up into the can when I checked it and found the problem. I don't know if the elite can has the same type of drain valve but you might check that.

It's the normal barb, and the elite can doesn't have the drain valve, you just unscrew it. Good to hear that it is probably normal, I'm kinda surprised no one has posted this as a potential problem. I come from a turbo background where any sort of unusual vacuum noise is usually a bad thing

I just installed my Elite and ran into the same issue. Here is a link to the noise:
It's not so bad with the engine cover on, however, when I take the cover off it sounds pretty loud. I'll drop an email to Elite and see what they think.

Be careful when jump starting cars, you could damage the computer

Anybody else have any input on this issue? I have yet to hear back from Elite.

Some sound is normal. Just make sure you used some Teflon tape on the fittings and the O ring on the can is in place.

I might be wrong but I think a few others have had this issue. I think I read that one guy replaced the hose with a better vacuum hose and it fixed his problem. Ask in the thread called V8 help desk. It was in there that I was reading about it.
