Stupid question, dealer is "recommending" some service...

My 2010 LT1 (A6-V6 of course) just hit 50k.

Dealer mentioned getting the rear differential liquid changed as well as a fuel-injection cleaning.

Is this rational to do @ 50k or am I being a prude? The car drives just as good as it did off the showroom floor and is bone-stock.

Thanks!

Both items are good candidates for service, given the mileage you've stated.

I'd also recommend changing your cabin air filter if you haven't done that yet and/or recently.

Excellent, thanks guys!

I like to take care of my car but in this "up-sell market" it's hard to separate the BS from the logic.

Depending on how you drive, you should have changed the differential fluid 25k miles ago. It's really simple to do, you can easily do it yourself. If you change your own oil then you can do this.

Buy a can of BG treatment and do the injector cleaning yourself for half the price.

IU changed my rear differential at 8k.
Not sure about the fuel injection cleaning.
I only use premium and change my oil every 3-5 k miles

Fuel injection cleaning is a waste of money if your car is running right.

I would disagree. Running BG through every 50k miles will keep the system clean and prevent excessive build up. Small expense for preventative maintenance.

Most additives, I would agree. But I have seen good results from BG.

I have owned over a half dozen cars with over 200,000 miles on each one and never cleaned the fuel injection. Guess I was just fortunate.

I have had a few occasions of engine running poorly, using BG and having the engine run beautifully afterward.

So I developed a habit of running the treatment every 50k or so miles. No troubles since.

Could depend on fuel quality, I would think.

Fuel system cleaners are needed to some extent. There are those out there that fill up at mom and pop stations that do not see much turnover so the fuel isn't the quality it could be. Case in point, my parents purchased from a small store because it was the cheapest around and they had issues with their fuel system. This was in a VW, and not a GM product. Cleaning the fuel system solved their problem. Since then they buy from a station that has a high turnover of fuel, so it is basically fresh, or at least more so than the previous station.

Plus, deposits are going to be an issue with direct injection coming to the main stream. Already seeing some of it in UOA's, (used oil analysis). Run some cleaner in the fuel system and the UOA comes back next time around improved.
