Thoughts after washing the Cruze & Crossfire
First of all, it is amazing how much easier these 2 cars are to wash. For a lot of reasons. Obviously they are both a lot smaller. But even though neither one has much if any wax on them at this point, the bugs, dirt, pollen, grease & tar, bird poop, all came off them much easier than the Camaro. Why is that? I did not see any etching where bugs or bird poop had sat for a very long time. On my Camaro a bug or bird poop can be on the paint just a day of so & very often there is already etching. And there were VERY FEW paint chips. I have been daily driving the Cruze back & forth to work, round trip of about 70 miles a day for 7 months. My son drove it on several long trips before he left for the army. It will soon have 20K miles on it. The front end had exactly 1 paint chip on it - 1. WHY? My Camaro's paint is full of chips. Granted, I daily drove it for the first 2 years and have around 36K miles on it but the difference is quite remarkable in the paint of these 2 Chevys. I don't understand.

For some reason the paint quality on the Camaro's is subpar.

Many camaro owners are reporting that.

Never seem to have any problems washing mine. And haven't seen any rock chips in the 9k miles it's been driven.

It seems like I have more chips on my 2011 Camaro with 20,000 miles than my 2007 Impala that had 43,000 miles. I feel your pain :(

But the Impala has the older oil based paint. The reason most often given when discussions of the paint on the Camaros is they had to go to water based paint due to EPA changes. But the Cruze is a 2012. It also has to have the water based paint right? What gives there?

same with mine.. but then again I have mine detailed professionally once a week (all my cars for that matter), and no issues, believe me my detailer is one picky SOB, you would think they are his cars, he nit picks at everything.. But then that is why I have used him for nearly 10 years.. he knows his $hit and takes pride in his work..

The Cruze most definitely should have the same type of paint. I don't get it either.

OT question, but is your crossfire an SRT6?

I could be wrong, but I was thinking they had not switched over to water based yet in 2007. Maybe someone else on here knows for sure.

I think it depends on the drive. I do a lot of freeway driving, but construction, traffic and trucks have hammered my DD. I'd imagine that's why you see the disparity b/w owners. My Camaro has one or two chips but it's never in traffic so no chips.
But if you're driving a different car on the same routes then there is something to questioning the quality of the paint. |

The front end of my Camaro is on par w/ out DD's consider the mileage. IMO the major issue is the way the front tires can kick debris down the sides and back to the Q-panels. Since I put on the mud flaps (excuse me, quarter flares!) I have dramatically reduced the number of new chips.
I may be lucky - no highway to or from work & rarely in any heavy traffic. Therefore I don't have to worry about flying debris in our day-to-day driving. |
