Synthetic Oil
I've taking my camaro to the dealer for its oil changes and decided
I would start doing it myself so I was going to switch to Mobil1 Full Synthetic 5w30 but the dealer said full synthetic is not recommended for the camaro. Is there any truth in that cuz I've never heard of any car not being able to use synthetic? Any information would be appreciated thank you. |

Well, they may be telling you that because of the oil consumption issue seen in the LLT engine. One theory is that the full synthetic oil is "too slippery" for the engine and it ends up burning the oil.
Others here will chime in with more info as well. I would stick with the semi-synth stuff that the manual suggests. |

Yea, I was offering one of the explanations that is being kicked around the C5 site as a possible reason why the dealer responded in the way that they did.

I've been using Mobil 1 since the first oil change and not any problems with oil consumption.

Some years back 2000. I bought my Harley, asked the dealer about Synthetic oil. Oh no they said,to slippery, cause gaskets to leak etc. Just use our oil thats specially blended for Harley engines he said.Well at the time I think there shit ass dino oil was about the same price as synthetic. After talking to others, looking at oil company data,I said what the hell I'm going to try it. Put a temp gun on the heads and I actually had about 25 degree temp drop with synthetic. Air cooled engine -25 degrees with synthetic. SOLD forever. Nowadays new Harleys are running synthetic right from the factory! They still sell there dino oil but guess what, synthetic is about $5-$6 a quart more from them. The dealer isn't very knowledgable, plus I think (i might be wrong) but isn't that Durco or whatever its called a GM oil product?
Just my 2 cents and experiences with dealers and oil |

I had an older model Corvette that I put full synthetic in....and it leaked/squirted out all over. Put standard oil back in and everything was fine. That was on a much older engine with quite a few miles on it. I doubt a switch to synthetic would be an issue on a modern engine; although I do remember seeing something about full synthetic not being recommended for the V6...but can't recall what the reasoning was.

The Dexos standard essentially requires a semi synthetic at a minimum. Usually synthetics help with oil consumption because they have lower volatility, that is they don't convert to gas when hot as easily. Your dealer is wrong.
You should Google the V-6 and oil consumption. My guess is that it is due to crankcase ventilation, which can suck liquid oil (as well as any boiled off to gas) in through the air intake if not balanced correctly. See all the threads on catch cans. It gets worse and worse over time because the residue from the oil that is burned tends to accumulate in the cylinders and gum up the piston rings causing more oil to get sucked in etc etc. In this extended case regular oil may burn more completely (due to its lower volatility/flash point) and not leave as much residue, so the oil burning levels off at some point. |

My regular mechanic swears by European synthetics over those made in the US. He said US-made Mobile 1 can't compare to the European-made Mobile 1. My experience is my Subaru turbo motor consumed a quart of US-Mobile 1 every 3k miles, but not a drop of Liqui Moly over the same interval.
