Caliper Issue ~ 2010 V6 LT

I would just like to find out if this is a known issue or something new. And is it, or should it be a recall that I don't know about?

2010 V6 LT with 43,000 miles

I took her to the dealership for an oil change and checkup before we leave for Sturgis. The service manager comes out and tells me that my driver's side front caliper is malfunctioning ~ it is not opening correctly and has totally worn out the brake pads and rotor. (The rest of my pads are still good.)

That's not the weird part ~ they could not find a replacement caliper anywhere, dealerships or aftermarket (go ahead and look for one online!).

Example:

http://brakeperformance.com/brake-ca...-Included-.php

They special ordered one from the factory and I got it last night ~ $154.12 ~ and it has a "Made in China" sticker on it. The pic is obviously of the new one.

I have not changed it yet because they quoted me $582 to change the caliper, both front rotors and brake pads, so I just ordered the (upgraded) rotors and brake pads myself and I have friends who will help me with the installation. (That was in addition to what I already paid for the caliper.)

I also want to do it myself because I want to see what is wrong with the caliper. I would think it was just a fluke thing because it's a car and shit breaks (no pun intended!), if it weren't for the mysterious inability to purchase them anywhere and why they couldn't just rebuild it.

Rebuild Kit

They have them on the link I included and they are only $20. I want to know why they felt like it couldn't be rebuilt. I already have the new caliper, so I will just see when I get the old one off.

I didn't know if they had a rebuild kit available. What is the shop hourly rate?

Rebuild Kit

Yes, the rebuild kit is available on the link I included, but I already have the new caliper. I don't know what their rate is ~ it's a dealership. I have someone who is going to help me replace everything, so that's not a consideration now.

I am trying to answer your question about why new and not rebuilt. In many metro areas the shop rates are well over $100. If that is the case for you it was most likely less expensive to replace than to rebuild.

Answer

I appreciate that, but I'm more interested in knowing if anyone else has had the same problem and why you can readily find and purchase the other three calipers, but not the front driver's side. As for rebuilding it, was it the cost or because it wouldn't fix the problem? ~ 43,000 is a little early for caliper malfunctions.
