Dealership Service Issue
Thursday afternoon I get in my car and start it up, I noticed the gauges didn't go through their normal sequence with the back and forth stuff(the oil pressures ones voltages etc worked). I thought that was odd, since it had never happened before. I decided to turn the car off and try it again and still no luck. When I began to drive the car, my speed odometer nor RPMs were moving(just stuck on zero). The only way I could tell how fast I was going was through the screen in the middle. I called to make appointment with dealer for friday morning, they said they got the issue resolved. It was happening due to a fuse in the fuse box being "dirty", and they had cleaned it but my warranty word not cover it since it is considered "maintenance" for the cleaning. I was charged $98 dollars for a hour of labor. Of course everything works fine when I leave the dealership, couple of hours later I get back in the car and the same thing is going on. Service is closed for the weekend, but when Monday comes I will be going back. Do I deserve to have my money refunded and have them find the real issue? I am pretty sure it has to be directly related to the gauges and that should be under my warranty (I have a extended warranty also). Sorry for the long story.

First of all the service department shouldn't do any repair without your consent. Furthermore, when they call you to get consent they should discuss whether the warranty will cover it.
If the warranty didn't, they still narrowed down the problem to a fuse. Well in theory. Obviously it wasn't a dirty fuse as it is happening again. So I would demand a refund for the last BS fix, and I'd personally direct their troubleshooting. Like, check for voltage at the gauge disconnect. If no voltage is detected, keep shooting wires forward until you find voltage. Or the gauges could be based on resistance/ohms, which is even easier. Regardless, get the name of the Service Manager and get your situations fixed both financially and mechanically. |

i had a 2008 gmc crew cab 5.3... the gauges would all of the sudden just max out on every gauge.. no other electric problems in the truck... i took the truck in and they checked it over could not duplicate issue.. i took it in 2 more times and to make a long story short i showed them pics on my phone of the fault... still wasnt good enough so i demanded a new insturment cluster and after talking to the service mgr i got my request...
my guess it could either be the elec connection or just an internal issue in the cluster... dirty fuse is a bs reason.. with an intermitent issue they should have atleast check the power connection in the back.. sometimes you gotta be a butt to get something done in the service dept.. YES refund... if they didnt get your authrozation to fix it. its on them...

cleaning the fuse box is maintenance? I cannot find that in the manual anywhere and in my 46+ years with cars I have never heard of it never.

Exactly, and the next thing im expecting to hear when I go back Monday is. "It's your aftermarket exhaust that's causing the issue."

I agree that they should have charged you for the cleaning in the context that actually fixed your issue. Just considering dirt in the fuse box isn't a defect on the manufacturers part. If it didn't fix it then they need to figure out what will. If it is something covered under your warranty ask for a refund. If it is not then I wouldn't expect to pay again as they should repair it free of charge because they misdiagnosed it the first time. Or whatever it may be they should give you a 98 dollar discount. That's what I would do if I was them.

If dirt is in the fuse box - unless he opened it up or left it uncovered how is that not a manufacturing problem? If the fuses corroded or varnished still a manufacturing problem as the materials are incompatible or the tension of the fuse holder is incorrect yet a manufacturing problem. I can pull the fuses on my service truck and the ends are noticeably cleaner than the part not in the holder as should be. |
