ZL1 Diff fluid vs. SS Diff Fluid

I hate to start a thread on a topic that looks played out, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I have a ZL1 diff in my SS and I use the recommended GM fluid with the friction modifier included.

I bought a used SS diff (auto) to install for the Texas mile (3.27 gears), and am in the process of swapping them. I drained the used SS diff and need to refill it. I have the GM ZL1 fluid. Will that work in the SS diff? I'm curious why the owners manual recommends fluid w/o friction modifier, but then you have to add the friction modifier .

I talked to a guy at Chevy who started to say "no", the SS needs different amount of friction modifier (BTW, the SS fluid at the dealer w/o friction modifier is $35 a quart ), and then he changed his mind and said go ahead and use the ZL1 fluid.

I'm thinking i'll just go buy some royal purple from the local auto parts store.

Does anyone know what if anything is different w/the ZL1 diff fluid? vs. off the shelf royal purple, Mobile 1, redline? vs. GM/AC Delco $35 a quart fluid w/out friction modifier that you have to add friction modifier to???

You will be fine with either and I would use the friction modifier if you have it and it are doing it anyways.

You should be fine with royal purple or lucas. I used them both in my diff in my silverado and they work fine with all the towing ive done.

I went w/Royal Purple and seemed to do fine on 3 standing mile runs...maxed out at 189mph.

Is there any grumbling at very very low speed, tight radius turning on the SS diff without friction modifier? I'm assuming it's a positrak diff?
