40 causes of "Too Much" Oil Consumption

I came across this very interesting PDF that was published in 2004 by Amsoil as a Tech Bulletin. It has 40 reasons an engine can consume "Too Much" oil. Each of the reasons has a paragraph that explains the how and why to the reason. Seven pages long. Good Reading. I am now much wiser after reading it.

4. Worn or Damaged Connecting Rod Bearings
5. Worn or Damaged Camshaft Bearings

How about #41, best friend's dad forgot to reinstall the oil drain plug after draining out old oil?

I stopped by to see a big note taped to steering wheel: Do NOT Drive. No Oil!

I asked him what happened and he said "Five quarts in, five quarts out, ya know what what I mean, John?" 30 years later we still get a laugh out of that one. He said the worst part was that his wife saw it happen and never let him forget it.

So with this list, pretty much any and everything will cause oil consumption. I hope we never have to go back to the day when we carried a quart of oil in the trunk.

I had a Harley back in the 70's that the owners manual said normal oil consumption was a quart every 700 miles.

A guy once told asked me: "Did you know why Harley's last for decades?"..."It's because they can't hold oil... You constantly have to keep adding it. It assures everything is always well lubricated. It's like a constant fresh oil change."

I've owned a couple of vehicles over the years that fit this description. Never a Harley, though, even though I've ridden for 36 years and owned seven bikes. Just never felt like waiting for parts to come in so I could go for a ride.

I kid, I kid.
