HIGHWAY 101 Trip

I am planning to take a trip down to Bay Area California from Seattle area. Has anyone drove on highway 101 coastal highway from Washington/Oregon to all the way down south to N.Cali/S.Cali and how was the experience? It must be fun driving along the coastline and handling Camaro on the curvy highway

Haven't done 101 in the Camaro, but have done it on the back of a bike. It was really great, except for the slow traffic. Also have done 101 down to Monterey and then continued down 1 to Point Mugu. Longer drive that route, but it was gorgeous water views and curvy. So curvy in fact that if you have someone who is sensitive when in a car you would not want to take that route!

I'll be headed that way in December, Tacoma to San Fran. I attempted I5 South same time last year and had to turn back due to the mountain pass being closed due to weather. I hope to take I5 this time, but I'll use the 101 as a bypass. My big question is how is the 101 during the winter, specifically regarding that cold, wet stuff...

Hwy 1 is the most scenic drive. 101 bypasses many of the towns up north in Cali.

It can get pretty foggy out since it is coastal and often will not burn off. Not entirely sure how it gets as the temperature goes further down.

I have made so many loops around 101 in the Camaro (Olympic Peninsula) I have lost count. This past Labor day week we drove our motorhome down 101 to the Redwoods for vacation. We towed our Suzuki dual sport DR200s down with us and rode Howland Hill road. We also rode them to "Trees of Mystery" and back to Fort Dick, CA. I love highway 101. Especially through Oregon.

Here is a picture of Hank at Ruby beach.

I just came up the coastal route from a Raiders game in Oakland, I suggest taking HWY1 when you get into Cali past Eureka to see the redwoods and stay closer to the coastline. Fun scenic trip, the wife loved it.

You will do fine. 101 is great, esp going through Big Sur. You can also do a bypass on Rt. 1 if you so choose.

I-5 is good for faster driving except for rush hour LA traffic and Siskiyou Pass at the CA/OR border of I-5, which is the highspot of I-5.

If you need to bypass the Siskiyou Pass, you can take Rt 199 at Grant's Pass at I-5 jct, it goes all the way to 101 but you may run into snow there as well half way through.

If you are coming from Tacoma, you can pick many places to hop over to 101, Rt 126 at Eugene to Florence is a good spot without snow.
