mechanic help
Hello i have a huge problem, today my heart was broken for my car, as i saw it struggle to go, i was at a intersection and the light was red, then turns green, as i had done it a million times before i step on the gas, i hear my engine rev but my car isnt moving (much), as i feel my car struggle across the intersection i head to the shoulder, i put it on park and pop the hood, i had 3 others with me as we witnessed the demise of my transmission, i turn off the car and let him rest for a good 10 minutes, i tuen it on and we are able to get a few more blocks up, thankfully my mechanic lived near, so tomorrow i await the verdict on as to what my car needs, getting to the point i'd like to ask.
how much does replacing the transmission cost? like refurbished / new? aslse kinda randowm but how about brakes all around? and what about shocks? winter has taken a toll on my car and i'd like to know aruond how much i'll be paying, i'm not sure on brands and if's or what's but its a 2001 impala, and ofcourse i wont get cheap stuff, something mid-range that wont cost a brick of gold either, thanks for your help. |

Front wheel drive? couldn't tell you about the tranny but the rest of it .....brakes all around is as easy as changing pads.....look at about 45 bucks if you do it yourself. shocks.....rear end shouldn't be a problem, maybe 40 bucks a piece, again if you do it yourself. As for the front end on a front wheel drive I don't know. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I put a junk yard purchase transmission in my car about two years ago. it had 40K miles on it and cost me 250 dollars and about two days time.

Well...these guys up here got some good news for ya. I, on the other hand, don't have that great of news when it comes to transmissions. I paid around $3,300 to have GM rebuild my trans. Actually, it was the aftermarket warranty that paid (thank God I got it!!!), but it was expensive none the less. It's going to cost a lot to rebuild. Depending, I'd look into a used or junkyard trans. There'll be one somewhere.
Brakes? Easy...do it urself and save the cash. Shocks? Rear will be easy. Front more difficult to do. Couldn't give you price on either...prolly $160 or so for all 4 corner pads?? |

thankfully i was told it was a sensor, either that or cables that arent plugged in correctly, but i was assured it was fixable without having to get a rebuilt one or near the cost of what repairing one would be, i lucked out this time, but i know it will happen and i should have saved enough to not worry about it next time, thank you guys for your help.

before you agree to get anything fixed, make sure you get (in writing i might add) everything they say is wrong, parts to fix, and overall price.
it might just be your clutches going out, how many miles are on the car? might just have a rear main seal leaking into the bell housing, could be a million things.

i got like 110k miles on it now, but i'm pretty sure its something a bit more seriuos because it slips voilently now, and theres a whinning noise coming from it, so i'm taking it to a shop that everyone has told me is good and he rebuilt my brothers about 1/2 a year ago, it ended up costing him 1,200 ruoghly, so i'll head to him too, he'll pick up my car and deliver it too!! my brother told him he saw the whole proccess and explained that he cleans the parts and replaces what needs to be replaced and uses the same transmission so he rebuilds it pretty much, i hope this works and i'll defenetely take care of it from now on (i buoght it with 85k miles, so i didnt know if the previous owner took care of it....ovoisly not!).
just to vent a little... i will NEVER EVER!!!!!! buy a used car again unless i get a whole lot of guarantees =/. |

dang, so you think i should shoot at a spot like aamco or something with some guarantee? i'm only really going for this because 1,200 is all i've really got to repair this car, but you're right about the double eged sword i wish i could just get a new one but i dont know the costs, and i didnt expect this i mean this car wasnt really cheap, i bought it for 10k about 3 years ago, though not new i hoped it'd last, but i've been checking online and it seems alot of impala owners have been having issues with their tranny's, some with 50-70k miles on it =/, i'll probably head to aamco tomorrow and get it diagnosed and see what they tell me, if its worth my money i'll go with them under guarantee ofcourse.
