Explain how the magnetic ride suspension know how much to dampen?
I sort of understand the technology. I believe in touring mode, it softens the suspension so you might not feel the uneven roads as much, and in sport mode suspension is stiffer. in track mode, it's very stiff.
but how on earth does it figure out how to adjust how to soften or stiffen the suspension in a given mode? considering this will be my daily driver, I'll most likely be in tour mode most of the time. How does the car know the changing road conditions so it knows to adjust the suspension? I saw in an video that it changes the suspension's dampening every inch at 60 mph. Just crazy I saw a video of a C5 corvette that had the 1st gen MRC vs one that didn't. the corvette pretty much goes airborne in some nasty roads while the MRC equipped one drove like there was nothing on the road... amazing!!!! I'm sure the 3rd gen is even better this. and can you guys really feel the difference between the tour/sport/track modes for the suspension? I took one for a test drive, and now that I think about it, I don't think I felt much of a difference. but that was a 10 min test drive (which actually included some highway driving) enlighten me! thanks!!

The difference is only apparent if you are cornering or if the roads are bumpy. Then you can REALLY tell a difference.
If you ever find that video, linky please. |

I think it is much more than the suspension with this car. I can tell the difference on the road but it is subtle. This car is so well engineered, from the steering, tranmission, balance of the car. Also I think if some of the guys who have tracked their car can tell you more because that is where it is meant to work all together. The car creates down force at high speeds which helps glue the car to the road. I have never driven a car so well balanced.

The magnetic ride has an own ECU and Sensor set. Additionally it uses the information of the Wheel Speed Sensor.
![]() Based on the data the ECU will calculate the optimal damping force and a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic particles are aligned against the direction of movement of the damper. As a result, the damping force of the damper is increased depending on the strength of the magnetic field. This allows the firmness of the dampers to be increased or decreased within a fraction of a second. ![]() Although not from the Zl1 this video explains the system nicely. Its from the same supplier |

Here's a good article explaining how the system works.

I imagine that the sensors measure how fast each wheel is trying to move up & down, as well as what the frequency is that its trying to vibrate at. This data is probably combined with information about vehicle speed, lateral g-loadings, PTM mode, and so on to come up with how stiff the shocks are supposed to be at any given moment.
Thats my guess at least.

basically there are sensors that measure movement. then voltage is varried to the magnetic dampner to ajust real time.
yes tour vs sport you can feel strait up. I honeslty drive in tour alot becuase it will still pull pretty close to 1g through your first turn if not hit that and the ride comfort is great. now you get on a road with multiple turns and switch back you want to pop it into sport or ptm 4 or 5 for sure. I had some seat time in a Z06 with phadt coilovers last month and I like the over all drive of the ZL1 better. the vette was more car in terms of overall perfromance 550whp ton of grip but the ride and drive of the ZL1 was still better to me and at that level you really have to be pushing the cars to feel a difference in the limit. I mean 30mph corners at 90-100mph. driving them back to back same day I just found the ZL1 to still comunicate the limit better and the overall ride was better. deffinalty made me wish I was not poor and could affor my next round of mods though as the corvette was bad fast. to really feel the differnce find a crappy set of railroad tracks or a bad road and hit that in tour and sport. If you are on too smooth of surface it will feel similar becasue the spring rate is still static.

Also.... look under your car (rear is easiest)....inward on the lower control arms you will see a small rod/hyme-joint (sp) heading up to a sensor. There is your up/down movement back to the ECU. There is one one each lower control arm area, front and rear.
