LS3 conversions...are they worth it?
Considering a LS3 conversion on my 2013 Camaro SS. But does it really have any performance advantages? I want to do this conversion to instal a Night Fury Cam...any suggestions??? Thanks.

You have to do it if you want the Night Fury cam. If you want to keep the VVT, talk to Rhino79. His VVT cams are outperforming every LS3 cam out there.

Every single penny - ask yourself, who invests big dollars on the L99 platform for total performance?

Throw the idea of that night fluffy cam out the door if you want a real performance setup. Stick to a VVT cam and get a converter with leftover money that wasn't used on the LS3 conversion.

Do a search in this forum for VVT cams, then make up your own mind. Look at the various shops that highly recommend the LS3 conversions and ask yourself how many VVT cars they tune. I can bet you the answer to will be VERY few, if any. That isn't because VVT is bad, it's because they aren't very familiar with how to properly tune it. They claim it isn't reliable enough to be in a higher HP car but that is being proven wrong every day. It's all in the tuning.

There comes a point where the VVT should be eliminated but in the case of many street cars keeping it is a nice feature. Like mentioned above the money saved on an LS3 conversions can be put towards a higher stalled torque converter which is one of the best mods you can do on an L99 car. As far as the cam is concerned the VVT will allow you to do more with less and keep the powerband a bit more steady. While a bigger cam will make more top end power.

You are really going to have to do your own research on this one. Camaro5 is 50/50

You can make good power with both. But as others have said, the Fast List says otherwise?? VVT cams are putting it down right now mainly Bc there are a few people that understand how to tune them correctly, which is why you get more with less! |

In my honest opinion if your DRAG racer and want your car to run its best on and off the track in a automatic transmission I would keep the VVT. If a shop/sponsor says you'll slap your self for keeping it then go else where. Won't turn this into a pissing contest but all I can say is keep your eyes on the fast list this year. I would even put $$ on the line there will be 2-4 new VVT cars in the 10s with an N/A setup

Im not even going to beat a dead horse....lol. I like it, and use it on every automatic, and the fastest L99 cars out right now run it. Id just say do your research, decide which route you prefer. Keep an eye on the fast list though. There will likely be 4-5 10 second VVT equipped L99s by the end of this year. If not more! |
