Anyone take apart the 2014 non-rs tail lights yet?

I really hate the chrome strip in the tail lights on the 2014 non RS taillights... I bought a "sacrificial" tail light on ebay, I'm hoping I can pop in the oven and get the outer lens off...

I guess the big question is if/when I get the outer lens off... What could I replace the chrome strip with? Can it even be removed without damaging the light housing? Paint it body color and just put the lenses back on? Paint it black?

For that matter, I'm wondering if there are any "cool" mods that could be done to the lens itself, or inside the housing aside from removing/painting/replacing the chrome strip...

NO, I do not want to tint the tail lights with Nightshade, or tint film.

Any thoughts, or has anyone else experimented with this yet?

You are a pioneer sir, post pics as you go as I am interested in this as well! The RS tails look cool tinted, I just fail to visualize anything cool with the non-RS 2014 lights.

I don't imagine the non-rs lights require a heat sink as they aren't LED?? I suppose if the inside of the "housing" is chrome it will probably still be attached.

Upon closer inspection of the tail light assy in the car, the housing (heat sink?) does appear to be chrome, and the visable chrome strip is attached... Mod away!

I used Trimbrite's black out tape, though just a small strip of black vinyl would work just as well.

I have a non-RS here, opened for experimentation. I have several ideas, but, need the weather to cooperate as paint is involved (no booth).

Once the outer lens comes off, it's all chrome. Nothing like the RS, though.

Any pics, is it possible to get the lens off without ruining it? Oven? Looks like my ebay '14 tail light shipped today.

These tails, like on the '10-'13, need to be cut open.

So it looks like there is a second lens (clear) behind the outside (red) one?

Does someone already sell clear ones?

The ones on my car are homemade. I removed the red lens and used clear silicone around the "half moons" to maintain a seal for the bulbs. The chrome behind the red lens is not weatherproof though, I'm using foil tape to maintain the "metallic" look.
