Anyone in the Navy?
Hi guys, I know this is a random post but is anyone in the Navy or A School? I need some actual opinions from people who are active on what life in the navy is really like.
Well maybe I sould say somethings about myself. I'm just turned twenty a month ago and I found out that I can't go back to college next year due to my parents monetary situation. I've got 60 credits under my belt but I need a real job one that I can have a career in. So that alittle about me. But I want to get is a opinion about what life out to see is like, how is the food, how hard is it to get into the STA-21 program, how hard is A-School and all that jazz. Also I took a couple ASVAB pretests and my score came out to a 91. Sorry for all the questions but any help would be welcome. P.S. If you are stationed somewhere is it possible to own a Camaro while active? |

Owning a Camaro while a jr officer or enlisted is hard unless you have $$$ already or someone buys you the car. Not impossible but depends on your life. Most butterbars are driving tiny POS's for a while.
The food is gonna be good enough for basic and will vary depending on assignment and what not. You should go for it if that's what you want. Don't try to calculate the difficulty but embrace the challenge. Here ya go little inspiration |

find yourself a recruiter and sign up for the NROTC scholarship program.
it will pay your tuition 300 per semester for books instructional fees (like lab fees, but not sure the amount) they will give you a grocery allowance, (250 per month for freshmen year, then 300, 350, and 400 per month for the next 3 years. they give you your uniforms and you get E5 pay during summer training periods (which is about 2000 per month) then when its all done, you just do 4 years as an officer... you have your schooling, and make a hell of a lot more money each month than you would have otherwise.

I got to meet the Sec of the Navy once when I was showing off a tri services personnel data system prototype back in the day. (bragging). So really you don't have to be active duty to know how the system works. There are 2+ million civilians and contractors in the system.

If I join the navy my long term in general is to be happy, have a house and kids and all that stuff. But in a more medium term I really want to become an officer. I want to be out at sea, put some adventure in my life. No one in my family really condones the idea but I want to do something that no one has really ever done. Also I don't really have a long term goal besides go to school, and I figure instead of wasting it around home working a stupid job I can do something productive that has more meaning-something that has a future.

If you figure out what you want to do when you get out of the Navy it will really help you while your in the Navy. There are so many diff programs and training.... you could get stuck doing something that will not translate into future jobs that you would enjoy. My best advice is to figure out what you want to do after military life..... that way you can go in and get the training "YOU" want.... Just remember if you dont work the system the system works you! |

It's good to have a plan but also things will change. In the military as in any big corporation. Your assignment and people will be a total crap shoot. Could wind up the best.. or the worst. You just won't know till you get there.
My advice would be to go for it and don't look back. But remember it's no cake and there will be a price to pay. Also you can expect a drawdown after the war winds down. So get a job that has civilian skillset you can use just in case. Like Medical or other fields where there are labor shortages coming up. |

I was enlisted Navy for 5 years, and served on a carrier for 4 yrs.I would def try your hardest to get into some kind of rotc or college program.the benefits of officer compared to enlisted are endless! if you already know you want to be an officer, go for it! But once your in as an enlisted its actually harder to become an officer, so try to get your college done now, there are lots of programs just gotta go out and find em!

Yea it's rare for former NCO to go to Officer. I worked for a Capt (USAF) once that was a Msgt for 20 years and tried for years to get in. Guy was top shelf really a good guy. But he was telling me it was damn near impossible.
