Pronounced clicking/tapping from left side L99 engine when hot
We bought a new '14 SS L99 Auto. 3 weeks ago. I have noticed there is a distinct clicking/tapping on left side(driver side) of engine. It doesn't happen when engine is cold. After it has been running for 6-7 minutes the clicking can be heard but as engine reaches operating temp, noise gets more pronounced. To me, this sounds like like a rocker arm or lifter.
Oil pressure is 23 psi @205 F. I took the car to dealer this morning and guy said "they all do it, evap solenoid" and "it is on the Left Side of the engine under the cover". He said "if you take it off you will void your warranty". What? I told him i had no intention taking anything off. I asked him to pull the engine cover and to point out this evap solenoid. It is on the Right Side of the engine. He then put the cover back on the engine and i found my salesman. He was most helpful and started up another L99 SS to compare. This car didn't have the clicking/tapping noise our car has. The salesman and i then went to the service manager and told him about this. I am to bring the car in on the 26th. Anyone else experienced this? Anyone know of any bulletins on this? This has dampened our new car experience somewhat. Bob Last edited by klaatu barada nikto; 02-27-2014 at 01:43 AM. |

I hope they gave you a loaner car. I would not have driven the car again until they can identify this noise.

Took our 2014 SS to our dealer today for the tapping/clicking on left bank of engine while hot.
Mechanic had the car for about 1.5 hours and Confirmed what i was hearing. Service manager told me that GM engineering was notified about this issue and a case number has been made. As it was related to me, GM's theory is that a piece of debris may be in a lifter. They recommended that when the car has about 2,000 miles, bring it in for a oil change and filter. If the clicking is still present at this point, GM will then decide what to do about the issue. Don't like having to deal with this on our new Camaro but it is what it is. Bob |

If it were me, I would not have taken the car from the dealership with a noisy lifter. The lifter could be damaged in different ways. If it were the wheel on the outside it will destroy your cam. If it is a pumping up problem, to much travle up on the cup will cause valves to not seat and burn. If a piece of debris is stuck in between the block and lifter you can do so serious damage to the block.

Thanks for the reply.
I get what you are saying. I have wondered about a defective lifter and the damage one could do. Thing that i don't understand is that it doesn't start to click until the engine has been running for about 6 minutes to build up some heat. GM wants us to drive the car to determine if there is a piece of debris in a lifter that might dislodge? after 2,000 miles and oil/filter change. The thing is, wife is disabled and it will take her a year or more to put 2,000 miles on the car. We are not happy with this unfortunate situation. Bob |

That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard a dealer say. It is probably a 3 hour job to replace the bad lifter. This is a brand new engine. The valve train is not supposed to make any kind of noise. Especially when the service manager confirms noise as a bad lifter on a brand new Engine.
There is a Chevrolet Customer Service Guy that monitors this warrenty section. He has been very helpful with problems like this. You should PM him. Last edited by Dimitrim; 02-26-2014 at 11:31 PM. |

Good advice and I completely agree with you.
This matter should be taken care of now. When i think of all the health problems wife has been through......this new Camaro is what she has wanted for a long time. We both really like the car and i want her to be happy. She deserves it. Bob |

New development.
Salesman called today and told me "GM will not waive the requirement to drive the car 2,000 miles and then change oil and filter" related "to see if a ticking/tapping noise will disappear". He told me nothing else can be done. Being that my wife has health problems, it will take her a year or more to drive the car 2,000 miles. We have to deal with it. If i ever buy another new GM car, i intend to check it out thoroughly before laying down the cash and not simply rely on the fact that "it's a new car". Bob |

I would PM Chevrolet Customer Care that is on this forum. They seem like they are extremely helpful with Chevy owners who have had problems with service issues at the dealerships.
