Idle trouble

Forgive me if someone has already posted this. I have searched and could not find anything.
Does anybody know why on a 1998 v6 when hot (210) the idle will fluctuate greatly? I'm talking dropping to 800-900 RPMs, then going back up to 1400-1500 then back down. It only does it at idle and when the car is really hot. It almost sounds like the car is at first starting to die, then tries to pick itself back up, then wants to die again.
I went to AutoZone and the guy there said that it may be the Idle air control valve. Is this a possible suspect? Can I just pull it out and spray some brake cleaner on it to try to clean it off without damaging it?

Help would be appreciated!

Sounds like you need a new fuel pump and fuel filter.. Those would be the first two I'd replace considering how old your car is and those parts when they start to fail do make the car act the way you are describing.
