Horrible gas mileage after running out of gas.

I have a 2010 LT. I was getting around 16 mpg for about 3 years. Just recently I have ran out of gas and had to get towed to the station. Ever since then I have been getting around 13 mpg. Does anyone have an idea on what may have happened?

I am not sure if the crappy gas mileage has anything to do with the fact that I ran out of gas or because I moved to a colder climate (from TX to PA).

The incident happened my 2nd week back in PA.

You might have a bad fuel filter.

Is this according to the DIC, or your manual calculations? If it's the DIC, reset it and let it recalculate. Running out of fuel has no actual correlation with loss of MPG.

Could very well be the gas your using in PA vs TX.

It's according to the DIC. I reset it every time get a full tank.

I didn't even think of that.

I've been following a similar drop in MPG and I will soon know if it was fuel as I have changed back to my regular garage ESSO instead of SHELL ... TBC [UK].

You may have more uphill driving, longer warm up, more headwind, heavier traffic, a host of things moving to a whole new area....

Cold weather itself causes mpg to drop, and if PA uses winter blend gas that can be another factor. Here in Mass it's normal to expect a 10% or so decline in mileage in the winter months.

The most obvious reason for lower gas mileage going from Texas to PA is air temperature. At the colder temperatures in PA, the air is denser and so your engine's brain puts more fuel into each charge to get the right stoichiometric proportion of fuel to oxygen.

Also, if the PA gas has more ethanol, the stoichiometric volume of fuel is larger.

Temperature alone will cause a significant drop. I notice a big difference between summer mileage and winter mileage on all my cars here in Michigan. Like others have said there could be other contributing factors like gas, grades, more stoplights, etc.

sounds like running out of gas damaged the muffler bearings

haha... just kidding

running out of gas can't hurt anything.

Is there any fuses to pull to reset the fuel trims like on the V8?

It's possible that it skewed the fuel map as it was possibly running lean before actually running OUT of fuel.
