weight stripping/legality
hypothetically asking.. if you were to strip 600+ pounds from this car, would it still be street legal? like.. taking all the reinforcement out of the car, replacing the dash and all the useless power seats/power windows etc; giving it lighter doors etc. obviously the car would be much, much less safe, would it have to be reported to insurance? would it still pass inspection as street legal?
don't get me wrong, i love the camaro to bits, and love my 6.2l.. but it weighs so damn much.. makes me wish i got a vette sometimes, even though the payments would be hard for me to pull.

I think vehicles are only required seat restraints.

Don't have to do all that to pull 600 out.

Inspections? What they don't know doesn't hurt them.
Much less safe? So pull out 700lbs and put 100lbs of cage back in for safety. I don't think you have to sacrifice safety, just that you'll be taking away some amenities and maybe comforts which it sounds like you don't mind so much.

I would think it would pretty much make the resale value of the car worthless, but I'd imagine that your not real concerned with that.
If you do, definitely put a cage in it, and make a thread of the progress. |

Stripping 600lbs should be doable. As long as you have seat belts, youre good.

What's your purpose for wanting to do this? A 1/4 mile machine? What's your goal? If you're going to do that, you might be better off starting with a body-in-white and building up.

I'm not saying it is or isn't a good idea, but I think it would be legal. That said I probably wouldn't tell my insurance company. Think about it, you can build a street legal kit car that wouldn't pass many of the tests car makers need to pass like front impact, rollover, etc. So the rules for a modified car are a lot different that the rules for GM to sell a car. To be street legal I don't think you need a whole lot more than lights, mirrors, seat belts, and in some areas pass an emissions test.

Besides destroying the value, why would you drive a car with reduced safety in traffic?
Stuff happens, and there are a lot of bad drivers out there. Personally, I'm glad my Camaro has reenforced doors and many airbags. You can always get more horsepower, but it's harder to get back parts of your body. |

It's easier and sometimes cheaper to add HP to make up for the added weight. You won't have to gut your car either. Hell, just adding 3.91 gears will make your car feel considerably lighter.
