maybe the plate was supposed to say "ASS EATR" instead of "SS EATR"

Maybe the guy had a Cobra before that car and needed a newer car and decided to keep the plates or maybe the salesman he bought it from lied to him about how fast it really. A lot of people are really dense when it comes to cars and just listen to whatever the salesman says and believe it. That is my theory.
