These are the redline speeds for each gear. You would want to shift a few mph earlier than redline. Also, as mentioned, you will watch the tach and shift just before you get to redline for maximum acceleration.

But this chart will give you an idea of the speeds. So basically you would hit redline at 39mph in 1st gear.

Maximum speeds in the auto(manual) LS/LT
1- 43(39)
2- 75(69)
3- 115(109)
4- 153(149)
5- 210(178)
6- 265(237)

Maximum speeds the auto (manual) SS
1- 37(52)
2- 64(81)
3- 99(111)
4- 132(159)
5- 180(189)
6- 227(280)

That chart is max speeds (redline) in each gear. No one said normal driving. Not even Forest Gump would be shifting at redline for normal shifts (well maybe he would).

And you're serious about only shifting at 2000 rpms for 500 miles? My A6 auto SS shifts higher than 2k (1st to 2nd gear) under light acceleration just drivng in the neighborhood at 18 mph.

Shift points depend on what you are trying to do...

In a hurry ... 4-5k RPMs
Racing ... 6k+ RPMs
Driving in regular traffic ... 2-3k RPMs
Saving gas ... 2k or less RPMs
Breaking engine in ... 4k or less RPMs

Just my shift points, these may or may not apply to you or anyone you know.
