Inspection

I moved to Austin about a year ago from Florida, in Florida there is no inspection or big ugly stickers or license plates that we have to put on our cars.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy my camaro at a Texas dealership but register the car in FL? Has anyone done it?

What do you guys do about inspection if you want to modify the car? It also seems like window tint is going to be a big hassle if they check at inspection. I was hoping to do about 15-20% on the windows and a light 50% on the windshield but according to the Texas DMV they check that during inspection.

Any ideas? Experiences?

Depends on where you get it inspected. Some places are more anal than others. Most places check your lights and whether or not your car stops when the brakes are applied and you're passed. If they're feeling frisky, they'll check the windshield wipers too...

Your car has to pass the computer's inspection also. Most places aren't going to open the hood or look under the car. They just plug into the OBD-II port and get the information about emissions/codes/etc. directly from the car's computer.

If you head into the nastiest parts of town and find a crappy old shop where 4-5 guys are just hanging out, you might be able to get away with a lot more on the inspection. But if you take it somewhere nice or some franchised shop, expect them to be very anal about every little detail. They can be fined by the state for passing something that didn't actually pass and the state does audit the inspection stations to make sure they are doing things right.

^^pretty much spot on. My EVO is pretty heavily modded and technically the emissions are probably nowhere close to passing. Open-air filter, straight pipe, louder than the state decibel limit--you know--the standard type stuff.

I go to a valvoline oil change place and they just did the OBDII thing and stopped the car, checked lights and stuff....that was about it.

Hum you should just do the right thing and register it here if you live here.

Fix the tint to be legal and get it inspected proper.

Just make sure you get the stickers on nice the way you like them. After a while you won't care.

heh, I've built cars all my life. I'll move out of the state before I stop modifying my cars.

If I have to, I will deal with the window stickers but tint and performance modifications... no can do.

The tint laws in Texas are actually pretty lenient in comparison to most states.

Obviously Florida has much more lenient tint laws, and by that I mean, they don't seem to care if you can actually see out of your car or not.

But, legal limit in Texas is still pretty damn dark.

Do I have to take the car to inspection after buying it or is it already cleared for 1 year?

New cars get a 2 year inspection....anything older than 3 years I think gets 1 year at a time.
