I think I'm blind...

Well, coming from the kind of background I do this is reasonable. I'm pretty transparent on the subject of race, but with the things I see on the news and on shows like 20/20-Primtime, etc. I can't help but think I'm living in some kind of box of utopia where everyone identifies you by your name. There are countless examples of racism involving various ethnic/racial groups all over the world, fact still stands that race is a concept only 500 years young that was meant to serve the interests of a specific group of people but has instead damaged society almost into what seems the point of oblivion, at all levels in all aspects. So today being the day that signifies the death of a man who truly tried to do something positive for the betterment of everyone I bring this issue to light.

Scotsman, this is a very sensitive subject, one I typical stay away from, but in light of the Death of Dr. King. I'll share my opinion.

I believe we have made progress, and I believe we should continue to strive for more. But do I believe racism will be whipped from the face of the earth or our great country? No!

Why you may ask, we'll I believe people are inherently afraid of those who don't believe what they believe, look like they look like, or act like they act.

I know this is a vague statement, but if you think about it! Humans have been battling each other since the beginning of recorded history. And these wars have been fought for more reasons they I can list, but the majority of wars have been fought over (1) Religion (2) Race (3) Land and or Money.

Because of these facts and the media drumming it into our consensus minds, resentment will always be fostered and reaffirmed into our multi cultured country.

I feel if we (everyone) could "Agree to disagree" - "Live and let Live" and stay out of others business...Only then may we someday bridge that gap.

But this is just my opinion...PLEASE don't take any offense...thanks..Noodles

I agree with Noodles...race is a very sensitive subject for me. My mother is scottish and cuban. when she was born she was put up for adoption because her father was not white. My great grandmothers family were extremely racist. My great grandfather was not racist, but he passed before the birth of my mother. So my grandmother decided to put my mother up for adoption rather than be surrounded by her racist family. My biological GM and Uncles found my mother in jan of 07. We learned that she had less than a month to live. I took leave and drove myself, wife and at the time 6 month old daughter from FL to chicago to meet my grandmother before she passed. I met my grandmother for the first time and I wanted to cry because Id spent so long to find out where I was from and knew that she could die at any moment. Unfortunately she was unable to speek, so I sat down beside her and held her hand. I showed her her greatgrand daughter, and I got to know my uncle Brock. Then my GM brother and his people came in and when he layed eye's on us I felt like I was in Georgia and the year was 1960. I wish everyone new how it feels to have someone look at you in such a manner that you know that the "N" is on the tip of his tounge. My mother felt so uncomfortable that we had do leave, dispite my uncle trying to persuade her otherwise. She passed soon there after, I have visited my uncle Brock and we keep in touch. I have not met my other uncle Brandon yet. There's been many days that Ive wondered how life could have been if my mom wasnt adoped, would she have struggled, and suffered if she had someone to genuenly care for her, and guide her. would I have had deal with homelessness, no medical care, poor schools, and live in an environment that perpetuated the "slave mantality"?

I dont know why Race, and Religon can drive people to dispise people that they've never even met. I have a family that I'll probably never get to meet. Its up to us to end the cycle of hatred wether it be race, religon, or social status. We have to teach our childeren not to Judge based on what they see. That person could be a close relative, but better yet, that person is a person that is no different than you. Same skin, same eyes, same heart, same soul.

We've made some major improvements but there is still a long way to go. My parents are at the least prejudiced, bordering on racist. My brothers aren't much better. Its not directed at any group in particular either. Natives, middle eastern, Asian, African, even Europeans it doesn't matter. Everything is just so casual about it with them that they probably don't even notice.

I'd like to say that I'm completely blind to issues of race but its not true. I notice, I don't act any differently towards others but I don't recognize them as being the same as me. That comes from my upbringing I am sure. From what my family said, and having practically no interaction with anyone other than white Canadians while growing up -there is one Asian family and one black family back home, at a town of about 7500.

I just heard on the news about uneasiness in Toronto between Koreans and Iranians who have recently immigrated to an area. And the creation of an all black school. It will be a while before we ignore where a person comes from. Hopefully it will eventually happen though

I've seen both sides where family members have been the victims of racism and have been guilty of racism. I'm from an Hispanic family my children are among the 5th generation born in the states. I've seen how far we've come as a family and how bad we've been. So I don't know. I will say that in general we are Much better at ignoring skin color than we used to be. And the ignorant ones are reducing in numbers. At least in my family.

I'm a big believer in the ability for people to discuss sensitive issues respectfully and civilly, because the media makes it out to be one way doesn't mean we have to interpret it the same.

This country was built off of racial superiority, it will be at least another generation or two, or maybe more before we begin to see serious change in interactions between different racial groups begin to mesh in a serious way. Even then, as a result of human nature I think it will become something else (as it already has; social class, etc.). All we can do is try and give it our best shot to really make a difference. That's what makes Dr. Martin Luther King such an inspiration and the reason why his spirit lives and resonates so strongly today, he dared to make a difference.

While all of the above is true out of selfish human nature I think the willingness to gloss over the issues we have with one another only allows the problem to fester, and not doing anything about it does just that, nothing. At the end of the day everyone holds dear to them their personal beliefs and experiences and will live accordingly to them. For myself, I'm a mixture of different people and many in my social circles have had trouble in trying to identify me as one thing or the other, and I love that, because I don't feel the need to subscribe to one group or another even though I have under social and peer pressure. In essence I've lived much of my life breaking down racial barriers in my immediate circles of friends, but not family, we're all varied members of different colors and respect one another as family, because that's what we are.

We're in a phase where the traditional terms of racism have changed. Despite this, there is some de facto discrimination that is perpetuated from the way we lived generations ago. Until that goes away, we will still see instances of racism.

I think it's pretty bad in some areas,
but in general, I think the U.S. is pretty good about it
