The Bandit Trans Am Question
Today I saw the classic Smokey and the Bandit for the first time in years, Uncut. Got to thinking what was under the hood of the Trans Am. You could see on the cowl that it was 6.6 ltr. I tried to pull up specs but couldnt find any. Also anyone know if this was stock at the time. Just curious.

Yep, stock 6.6L with that awesome shaker hood. I had a 1979 Black on Black in 1980 (with Casette and 8 track baby). For the time it was incredibly fast. Today, a good one is a bit pricey. The car wasn't weight balanced well so it was a little sloppy in the rear end. The Camaro is 51/49 (PERFECT). Way to go GM engineers!

We had a 79 6.6 TA. Black with a Silver and Red Fire Bird and white interior. Car would spin them all day long. I remember we even put a lift kit on the back springs and used a Coors Tallboy to measure what kind of clearance we wanted between the tires and wheel well. The old Camaro's and Firebirds at the time had a real problem with the leaf springs straighting out.
It look bad ass with the lift kit. |

Two of them was specially built and designed for the Lemans that Pontiac never used. Two of them just had the 5.7L 350 and only 1 of them had the 6.6L 400 (the film studio had to buy these three and their budget could only afford one 6.6L). The drive train was stock on these three however the suspension and other aspects of the cars was modified for filming. The body of the 2 5.7L cars was altered to match that of the 6.6L. |

My "Bandit" was a present from my husband in 1979 to ease my post-partum depression. and
Bought it right off the show room floor. I liked it for about three years, it always was so rough, and something was always wrong with it. Definately not my favorite car, but a great gift!

The Year One Burt Reynolds Edition cars are pricey, but badass none-the-less!

The car in the movie came with an automatic transmission and if it has the '6.6 litre' sticker on it (which I never paid attention to), then it had the standard code L78 Pontiac 400 engine rated at 180 HP and 325 lb/ft of torque.
In 1977, California had the option to come with the Oldsmobile 403 V8 which probably wasn't in the movie car, even though the shaker sticker for it was also "6.6 Litre". The desirable powertrain is the code W72 Pontiac 400 rated at a bit more horsepower (220) but a tiny bit less torque (320) mated with the 4-speed manual tranny, which the movie didn't have. The only immediate sign of a W72 engine other than the buildsheet or trim tag were chrome valve colors and the sticker on the shaker saying "T/A 6.6" instead "6.6 Litre." Ergo, the movie car probably had the standard code L78 Pontiac 400. ... ... God, I miss Trans Ams. :\ |
