3.91 Gear Swap Question

I am planning on swapping the stock 3.27 ring and pinion in my manual 2010 v6 to the 3.91. It seems that Motive and Richmond have a bad rep with their gears making noise, so I have narrowed it down between GM's 1LE 3.91 and Lingenfelter LPE 3.91

Just wanted to know your guy's experience with the 3.91 and what brands you guys use. I also have an IPF supercharger and I don't want 1st gear to be too short which is why I might do 3.70 instead

That first gear worries me on manuals, 4.46 or something, end ratio would be 17.5168, tire shredding ratio. You will need to be a good shifter and have great tires to get good times at the track.

What brand are you looking at? And ya I might be leaning towards 3.70

See, you make high rpm power. Normally I would say don't do it. With this scenario, I recommend 3.73s but 3.91s will work too. Your first gear will be very short (end around 35mph) but because of the high rpm power supercharger, well... shit will get weird.

I have to swap out my entire differential, so I'm doing a 1LE differential with 3.91's from the factory. Any time you swap gears there is a chance of gear whine, can't be avoided.

Gears can be fun though if you don't mind the gas mileage drop.

Why is it that Lingenfelter sells 3.70 and Richmond 3.73?

It's like how there's a 4.10 gear and a 4.11 gear. 4.10 is 41 teeth on one gear and 10 teeth on the other. 4.11 is 37 teeth on one gear and 9 on the other. So chances are 3.70 is 37 teeth and 10 teeth, while 3.73 is probably something like 30 and 8 or 33/34 and 9.

Good luck on the swap! I had to do the whole diff because I am an auto, and went with 4.11. Love how it launches! If you have any questions pm me.

R.i.p gas mileage

I have this whine when I am cruising around 4-45mphs...it starts when I lightly press on the gas but goes away once I accelerate.

A gear that is numerically higher (say a 3.91 vs a 3.27) is considered a "lower" gear. Let's call'em bigger gears.

You reach peak engine speed sooner (at a lower speed) with a bigger gear. This gives your engine a mechanical advantage and can allow it to accelerate more quickly than an identical car with smaller gears- even though the car's not producing anymore power.

In short, when driving you'll reach higher RPM at lower speed.
