Replacing non-leather steering wheel with leather?

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to replace the non-leather steering wheel with a leather one? Specifically an LS wheel without bluetooth/stereo. I've seen the part on ebay, im guessing theres also a way to order it from the gmparts site as well... but how difficult would it be? Can you just unscrew it, pop the airbag in, plug in the wires, and thats it - or is there more to it? Thanks.

DO NOT JUST GO BUY A LEATHER COVER!

If you want to do it right, buy a Camaro wheel without the airbag. Wheels come off very easy. Wheels are pretty reasonable without the airbag. The AB is what is expensive.

Remove your airbag.
Remove your wheel.
Install new wheel.
Install your airbag
Sell your old wheel.

Very few tools required. May need a steering wheel puller. I have removed several wheels without but it is much easier with!

This is pretty much correct. I just bought a base steering wheel for my 2SS (I know, I'm going backwards right?) so that I can rebuild it from the ground up. I'm re-shaping it, making the grips bigger, better leather wrap, carbon fiber, etc. The process above is exactly right. The new steering wheel will also come with the radio controls and what not if you buy a 2LT leather wrapped. The plugs are all there ready to be utilized with whatever wheel is put in. Simple process, just make sure to disconnect your battery ;-)

The steering wheel should work but if you didn't have the radio controls etc. before they won't work now.

why is this? my 08 silverado was a WT model, totally stripped, I added audio controls DIC and foglights all plug and play, harnesses all built into the car, have they gone backwards in engineering this car?

I think it has a lot to do with the radio. It may need to be programed or the controls may only work with the high end boston unit. I know someone mentioned putting fog lights in a explorer that didn't come standard with them even though wiring was there the dealer had to program car to let it know they were there to work. Also did you check to see if you need to put a fuse in the main panel? They probably would have left it out if your build didn't need it for something else.

I just checked and f19 in the drivers side fuse panel should have a fuse it says STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS BACKLIGHT It could be a simple answer that is if it doesn't already have a fuse. hope this helps!

It's the fuse and still needs programing. I had a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix before I got the Camaro and when I switched out the steering wheel I needed the fuse for the lights and had to take it to the dealership to be programmed.
