winter tires alternative
ok so im kinda short on $$$ atm. im rolling with Pzero all season tires with stock 20' rs wheels. u guys think sandbags in the trunk would be a good alternative for winter tires this coming winter since im running with all season tires? i know snow tires is the best options but yeah. kinda low on $$$. please help. i live at chicagoland suburbs btw.

I don't know how the all season p-zeros do in the snow, but I'd never recommend anyone trying to drive in cold temps, or especially in snow (even as little as 2") with the summer ones. Sandbags might help, or you might be able to find a used set of cheap winter tires that will fit on your stock wheels.

Hey, I'm in chicago too. the all season's are horrible in our cold temps, not to mention the snow. I had extra weight in my trunk as well with just 30 degree temps, and the tires were very suspect

This is just my option, but I feel like the sandbags would be a bad idea. Considering the p-zeros aren't really made for snow and the fact that the rubber will be as hard as a rock you will have a hard time stopping, now you introduce extra weight in the back that would take even longer to stop. Idk how the all seasons match up compared to the summer only but why not look for a set of heritage wheels. I know your short on cash but for probably the same amount of money or less than your insurance deductible you could pick up a set and have a little more piece of mind. Good luck.

I have seen some pretty good deals on used snow tires, I think there is a set on Chicago5thgen right now.
I'm in Chicago and have Pirelli snow tires. They work great.

You will spin out and crash that car. Don't do it. Just keep your eye out for some used ones on the forums.

You're 20 inch Pirelli tires are NOT all season. Putting sandbags in the trunk will do nothing we these tires. You are going to need snow tires or do not drive the car when it snows. The factory 20 inch Pirell's are SUMMER tires. Just a heads up.

Agree with all the above!!! I got caught on performance tires on a different car a few years ago - I've never in my life been as scared as I was trying to get home from work. Could not move on ice, even sliding when stopped - front wheel drive, manual 5 speed. We get crazy weather and can go from +15 celcius to -20 in hours. Imagine what the roads are like - light rain to ice. It took me 4 hours to go 20 kms, I finally pulled into a shopping centre and called for a ride. It wasn't just me who got caught, the entire city came to an abrupt halt as this storm hit during rush hour. Busses were sideways trying to get up hills, cars everywhere. Called the dealer the next day, ordered snow tires and had them installed in time for the next storm a week later - made a world of difference!!!! Thankfully I did not cause or get involved in any accidents that day.
I have snows on my SS and have not required sandbags in the trunk over the last 2 winters. The traction control will keep the car straight on a start, 2nd gear starts may be required, but I have not had any issues driving over the winter. Get proper tires and the car will handle fine. This time of year looking for used set ups can be challenging, but worth it as it will save you a bit, but you'll be replacing them sooner!!! good luck! |
