Any negatives to a CAI?
This question may vary depending on the model, I'd imagine.
But I was wondering, lets say you have a CAI, is there anything you should avoid (or do in particular)? There was one I saw that appeared to have an intake tube aimed downward, with a cone filter (not in a box to the side like other CAIs), and I thought that'd be a problem if you end up going through high water.

Most of the submersion issues have been solved. For example, the racing scoops made by Apex, JRE, and others have special holes in the bottom to let out any water before it hits the intake.
You can also add an Injen Hydro-Shield, a water resistant cover that slips over the filter.

Only negative I have seen is the stupid goofy grin on my face all the time. If you can get past that, it is all good.

Just the same old rule of thumb for everything else in life: "You get what you pay for."
On a side note, don't take your Camaro through "high water," regardless.

The oiled filters let in more particles, jury's out on whether that matters much in the long term/life of the vehicle.
Not sure how loud a CAI on a Camaro would be, but my experience is that it's a pretty loud add-on so you better like the noise it makes. Water, even splashes, won't likely make it up that far in the engine bay to matter. Look at your engine bay right now. Do you see evidence of water getting anywhere near the current intake box? |

Is it the Injen intake that I'm thinking of that seems to just stick downward?

Yes you are correct. The filter sits directly behind the fog light area on the injen longtube intake.

Downsides, no way!
Speaking of water intrusion, many people do not know that our Cold Air Intake goes through extensive water intrusion testing, where droplets of moisture are tested for on a microscopic level. They don't actually look for droplets with a microscope, they have teting equipment that measures any water intrusion, but I think you get my point All of our intakes are designed so that water intrusion will not be an issue under normal driving conditions. There are intakes that place the filter in areas that are not the best location, and there have been stories of hydro-lock involving some of those styles, with our CAI that issue is non-existent. |

I have seen a noticeable decrease in my gas mileage. This may be due to the uncontrolled urge to get on the gas but I blame the intake. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It's a Dingledarm. It's there to dampen side fumbling. If your marzelvanes fumble too much they can cause total protonic reversal. It gets ugly from there. This is really the biggest problem with the new Camaro. That and the tri-pronged blivot.
