Wheel weights on my wheels?
Hi guys. I just got my car on Tuesday, but I just noticed something today.
![]() On the top right, you can see a lot of those wheel weight things. There are also these weights on the front left tire, but there are only a few of them there. Are these standard? What are they for? Can I take them off?

Those weights are used to balance the wheels, so, I wouldn't take them off unless you want some shake in the steering wheel.

Those weights balance the tire/wheel. if you remove them you will have horrible vibration. Leave them alone and have them re-balanced at 5,000 miles and every 5K thereafter.

Is it normal to have these weights on a car that is brand new? I'm kind of shocked; my car only has 128 miles on it.

sometimes you can have tire shop slip the tire 180 degrees and rebalance.. Could use less weights - maybe..

Oh yeah, totally. Like, anytime you get new wheels, you need to get them balanced.

Yeah, definitely leave those alone. Those are the equivalent of this style of wheel weights:
![]() The stick-on ones you see on your wheels are used for wheels that don't have a flange to attach the other ones to. |

Ok, well thanks guys. Now that I notice it, it is kind of going to be an eye sore to me, but hey, I guess there is nothing I can do.
I just thought that if a wheel came brand new from the factory, it wouldn't already be unbalanced.

I too was stunned by the amount of weights these new rims and new tires take! My back right has over 5 ozs of weights...
I called Pirelli they said call GM, the rep did say this is their first 20 inch tire and it is made for the Camaro. Gotta wonder if the tires are new product learning? |

Some wheel guys can do the weight like camaropete posted, but on the other side of the wheel, so it can't be seen. I don't know how good it works, or if it's even a legitimate way of doing it. You can look into it I guess.

Those weights are there to balance the Tire and Wheel Assembly. You are not just balancing a a tire or a wheel you are balancing the combination. The weight is relative. If you don't want to see them your wheels can be balanced differently. However the adage of to gain something you have to give something up holds true. If it is looks and you balance differently you can induce some vibration into the assembly. This style wheel they are currently the best possible way to minimize vibration.

the larger the wheel, the heavier the tires, the more weight it takes to balance. Where i used to work we had a Hunter Roadforce GSP9700 balancer and it could do all sorts of special ways to balance, but only once did i see a tire/wheel combo that didn't require more than .5 oz of weight on at least one. And we used to do offroad jeep wheels and tires up to 39" mudders that needed lbs of weight! If you really want to see how well they are balanced, try and find a shop that uses one of these machines and have them rebalanced and checked. The right machine with the right operator makes a difference.

Wheel weights can be used both on the inboard and the outboard sides of the wheel. Just depends on where there are imperfections in the wheel and/or tire. The bigger & heavier the wheel/tire combo is, the more weight it MIGHT take to balance. Huge offroad truck truck tires can take a TON of weight to balance.
