rear diff
Recently had 3.91s put in my ss. Noticed gear oil smell. Put up on ramps. Suspect front seal? Is it simple to replace? Can diff be left in car? If not....cost?
Thanks |

Let me re phrase this.....has anyone done a front pinion seal in a 6spd ss? If so, can it be done without removing the differential?

In order to replace the seal you have to remove the pinion which means the lash and crush sleeve and all that stuff need to be reset.
I would just take it to whoever did your gears and see if they'll fix it. Ideally they should have replaced that seal when they did the gears anyway.

Shops do replace diff seals with crush sleeves without taking the diff out. You have to count the number of pinion gear threads sticking out from the nut and mark nut and pinion gear so you put the nut back in exactly the same place; therefore, not changing the preload. The diff seal is about $15 from the dealer.
Where the wheels fall off this a bit is your supposed to use a new diff nut every time because you have to stake it. To do it without pulling the diff and resetting it up, you have to be willing to reuse the existing nut.
