Brake pads change

Hey guys,

I don't know how to tell from the pads whether I need to change them or not. Can someone please take a look and tell me if I need to change them? I'm going to NASA HPDE event next month and want to make sure I have enough brake pad life left.

Thanks!

Looks great, many miles left. I´ve killed new pads on track days so bring extra to be safe. Some drivers brake more and eat more pads than others.

Those pads are still almost new. I'd say you're fine.

Best regards,

Thanks! I'm actually very surprised —*on my automatic Camaro in Moscow I had to replace them around this mileage, but here it's like magic thanks to stick and other driving style.

That little metal tang is the squealer to tell you that they are worn out. Best to change just before then to not gouge the rotors

I'm very surprised by this, almost 14k miles. I guess manual, less dust on the road and more highway miles do this. Good to know!

As was also mentioned, it's not due to be replaced until that little metal tab starts hitting the rotor face, making noise. Use that as your reference : )

Guys, he did say 'HPDE' . . .

What pads are they, and what does NASA have to say about minimum pad thickness on their tech sheet? The HPDE entities that I've run with want to see 50% thickness, though it's not clear whether that's 50% of the total friction material thickness or 50% of the material down to 'discard' thickness, which would be at your wear squealer thickness (which you might not hear when you're at speed out on the track with a helmet on . . .).

Try to download a copy of the inspection checklist for your event.

Thanks. based on what the guys said that pads look "like new" I assume that I will pass their inspection for this event.

If you are headed to an HPDE you may want to change out your pads to a track ready compound. While the OE pads are a great combination street play pad, they are not high level HPDE pads.

What track will you be running?
How many sessions do you expect to run?

Pads look great. If this is your first HPDE I don't see the need for a more aggressive compound. The stock Ferodo compound is actually well suited for beginner HPDE. Go have some fun on the track!

I find it interesting that we can offer pad recommendations for a driver we know little about heading to an unknown road course.
