Transmission/clutch problem V8-SS

I posted this in the transmission forum but only had one response so I am reposting on this forum.

About a month ago I was sitting at a traffic light in 1st gear with the clutch in. The light changed and when I let the clutch out it did not fully extend and the whole car shook, it was like a chattering kind of shaking. I pushed the clutch in and let it out and it did the same thing. I then took it out of gear put it back into 1st gear and the clutch acted normal.

I didn't think much of it, just thought something was sticking because the car was new. Yesterday it did it again at 1900 miles but the shaking was more violent and it took me 4 times putting in and out of first to get the car moving. This time I could smell a burning smell and I assumed it was the clutch that got really hot. Shifting through the rest of the gears went fine but now when I start from a dead stop the car shakes a little bit just before the clutch pedal comes all the way out like it's slipping or something.

I have never even done a burn out in the car so its not like I have been abusing it or anything. Any idea what the problem could be? Could the clutch need some kind of adjustment? I called the dealer and they said to bring the car in next week and they will check it out. My fear is they are going to try to blame me for something that caused damage to the clutch. They can see by the tires that I haven't been doing a bunch of burn outs or anything.

Any suggestions what the problem could be? Do you think I need to worry about the dealer blaming me for something?

Sounds like you gave the car too much gas when the gears were not fully connected. That happened once or twice with me too the first week. Not a big deal and there is nothing wrong with your car. If there was, it would happen every time or most of the time.. The burning is the clutch but it is very strong so no harm done there after a couple of those.. You just need to work on letting out the clutch and giving it gas with a smooth motion.

Two things come to mind. Are you new to driving a stick? It sounds to me like it may have been in third instead of first. No malice here but that would explain shuddering and the cluth smell. Another thought would be air in the clutch lines but I don't know if the symptoms would be the same. By all means get it checked.

Superman- Thanks for the response but I am sure that isn't the problem. I have been driving a stick for 25+ years. I don't give the car much gas when I let the clutch out. This is an event that has only happened twice, once when the car had about 1000 miles on it, and again at 1900 miles. I know what you are talking about when you let the clutch out during high RPM and it was a similiar feeling to that but not the same.

I know when you try to explain something to someone it's hard to understand so maybe I am not explaining things right. The clutch pedal would not come back up to it's normal position, it was like it was 1/2 engaged which was making the clutch slip. It would not return to the full unengaged position until I took the car out of gear.

Any other suggestions? Is there anything I can check or try prior to taking the car back to the dealer to be checked out? I thought about trying to do a good burn out to see if the clutch will correct itself, but then I'm afraid that would give the dealer a reason to think that the car has been abused.

Check your fluid and make sure you have enough, and it's not black with contaminants. Unfortunately Chevy decided to make the clutch and brakes use the same fluid and reservoir. Clutch dust is a known issue that contaminates the fluid.

There's a thread on this very subject:

op, I'm betting you've got a slave issue from "over slipping"/(heating) the clutch too much too often. It really doesn't take more than 1500rpm to get moving from a dead stop. I use like 800(idle) if I'm on a perfectly flat surface if I'm just cruising. Usually I give it like 1100-1300rpm and after that my clutch is fully engaged. If you're revving to like 3000 and above and you always do it that way you've probably popped your slave. Check your clutch master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid is dark get a syringe and pull it out, wipe the cup, and add fresh dot 4. If you have a leak, then its expensive lol

Sounds like a hydraulic issue to me. Take it in to get looked at without trying the "burnout" fix. You do not want to raise any issues that will not be covered.

I engage the clutch at less than 1000RPM, driving a stick is not new to me. I do not slip the clutch when taking off or between gears. I've been driving a stick for 25+ years.

Today I drove the car and everything seemed fine. I will check the fluid reservoir tomorrow and see what I find. I am going to take it to the dealer for sure next week. It can't hurt anything to have it checked out.

I checked the brake fluid and it is the color of very strong tea so it is not clear like it's supposed to be. I am going to change the fluid as suggested by the video.

Just to save time looking in the manual, can anyone confirm the brake fluid is DOT4?
