Winter tires & wheels for RS Camaro, smaller size then 20 inch mess up the odometer?

I have heard people talking about their winter tires/wheels....and how if they step down in size from the original 20's it will mess up the odometer readings for miles....is there any truth to this....i wanted to put on either 17 or 18 inch wheels with snow tires for the winter...thanks.

Rim size does not impact the speedometer/odometer readings at all. The overall tire diameter is what you need to be concerned with.

For example, the Camaro comes with 4 different rim sizes (18"-21") and 8 different tire sizes but they all have one thing in common - the overall tire diameter is right around 28.6"-28.7".

18" (LS, 1LT) - 245/55R18 = Diameter = 28.61"
19" (2LT) - 245/50R19 = Diameter = 28.64"
20" (RS, SS) - 245/45R20 & 275/40R20 = Diameter = 28.68" & 28.66"
21" (Option) - 245/40R21 & 275/35R21 = Diameter = 28.71" & 28.58"

Basically, when you are shopping for snow tires and wheels, it doesn't matter whether you buy 17", 18", 19", 20", 21" or 22" wheels, just make sure whatever tire you buy has a diameter/height of right about 28.65" and you'll be fine with your odometer/speedometer being accurate.

If you want 18 inch rims for the winter, 225x60 will have the same overall size and will not mess up your speedometer or odometer.

I had a guy tell me that I would HAVE to buy 20 inch winter tires but they are very expensive and he was WRONG. There are many 18 inch winter tires to choose from.

Overall diameter calculation isn't rocket science. Here's my explanation from another recent thread.

275 = tread width in millimeters
35 = aspect ratio expressed as a percentage of the tread width (35% = .35)
R18 = rim diameter in inches
25.4 = conversion factor from mm to inches

Overall tire diameter = (((tread width * aspect ratio) / 25.4) * 2 ) + rim diameter

(((275 *.35) / 25.4) * 2) + 18 = 25.5787" tall

NOTE: ((tread width * aspect ratio) / 25.4) is the calculation to find out the tire sidewall height in inches

On an LT, you should be fine with an 18" rim. If you don't want a bigger gap than the stock gap, then you need to make sure your tire diameter is about the same as the stock 28.6" size. For a 19" wheel, a 305/40R19 would be about 28.6" tall. For an 18" wheel, a 275/50R18 would be 28.82" tall.
