Arrow Exhaust Grew a Tail

Alright guys this is a first for me. After putting 1,100 miles on my ZL1 in my annual trip to Michigan for the dream cruise, I stopped at a quarter car wash after my 270 mile drive back to Chicagoland to debug my car. I come around the back and see my driver side tips coughing out what appears to be packing material (think unraveled brillow pad). I pulled it out and haven't done much else. See the attached pictures.

Relevant details:

- just did a bunch of work to the car (cam, headers, pulleys, injectors, tune, etc.)
- exhaust set up: 1 7/8 Kooks LT's, Kook's HFC's, stock NPP dual mode cat-back with m2w controller
- I ran back from MI with the exhaust closed until the last 30 miles

Theories:

- packing material from HFC's or mufflers (more airflow with mods, etc.)?
- _________???

Car seems to be running just fine. I've had plenty of modern muscle cars with mods and have done all kinds of driving and have never seen anything like this.

Looking forward to feedback.

Thanks,

Brent

It is the packing from the muffler and it is common.

Yup, it happens a lot. Not necessarily on our cars, but in general.

A while ago at my friend's dealership I saw a little ricer that looked like a chicken had been spit out of it's muffler.

That's just the sound insulation. The only major two concerns will be a change of engine tone, and potential heat issues. To be safe, I'd check to see where it's coming from and if it's against something that could catch fire if too hot, it'd be best to get some more insulation and replace it yourself. Otherwise, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Most likely, you don't need to do anything right now. I'm just saying this because I have a habit of taking care of minor things early before they potentially become major issues.

Looks to me like steel wool, it is used for sound deadening not heat insulation. IMO drive on and enjoy the ride.
