Lax Inspections by state

Can we make a list by state for us to go to where the inspectors don't care as much about mods like straight pipes, etc...? I feel like it would help everyone out

Great idea! Let's make a database of places that pass illegal cars, and see who loses their inspection license first!

If you're that concerned with it, move to a state that doesn't inspect cars.

I don't think any shops would really want to be listed on a public website as turning a blind eye on state and federal mandated emission violations. It could be big trouble for them.

Seems to me that ratting out any place that might cut you a little slack here and there would be a lot like pointing a loaded pistol at your foot. Sooner or later . . .

Here's a list for South Carolina ranked in order:

1) EVERY automotive shop.

There you have it.

SC used to have visual safety inspections (not aware of any emission test shops though). Stopped them 20 years ago. Outside of many incorporated towns, it's dirt and swamps. So there wasn't much in it for the inspection stations. Near the end you drove up with a newer car, they just went through the motions, collected your $3.50 and put a sticker on your car's windshield and handed you a receipt. See you next year.

Vermont threw a mechanic in jail for pencil-whipping an inspection.
My shop- it passes by the letter of the law or we fail it. If something is so borderline that we aren't sure- it fails.
The point is to make sure the car is safe, not just has a sticker on it.

that's pretty much the case here in VA too. Here, the state police run the program and each have a certain territory they handle all the shops in. if they pull someone over and can tell the sticker was pencil whipped, they're probably going to recognize the name signed on the back of it. and if a mechanic gets caught doing it, not only does he loose his license, the shop will loose it's license to do inspections too. and that brings a lot of potential customers in the front door.
I'm not stupid, I know inspectors will hook up friends occasionally, but for the general public there's very little slack.

heh heh. Yep. Last I recall it was $3.50. Note on my 1985 442 below, it shows the final due date as 3/96. (3/95 inspection date). They discontinued the program a little later in 1995. I never removed that decal for posterity. Or I was lazy. One of the two.

For $3.50, do you really think they're going to go through a lot to inspect your car? Program was pretty much ineffective, so they discontinued it. The things I know they looked at was glass and all the lights working. But that was about it.

Here in Nevada, Clark County requires emissions checks; however, our city, Mesquite, is exempt....don't know why, don't care, just glad it is

I suggest anywhere in the countryside, or a red state in general. We love our guns, beer, cigars and muscle cars where I'm at. God bless Arizona.
