Sound deaden whole interior questions.

In looking for tips and advice from people who have used sound deadening material not just in the trunk but the whole cabin. I'm thinking of pulling seats and all carpet and doing from firewall back to the trunk. I'm not 100% on which I'll buy yet. The stuff I looked at before was 1ft by 2ft. So for those of you who have done it, how did you do it? Have any pictures? Did you just start at the edge sill on driver side and go across? I've never worked with any sound deadening material so I'm a complete noob. Thanks

Yes, used 3 of those "9-sheet" packs of Dynamat Extreme (115 sq ft) and 2 rolls of Dyna-liner (24 sq ft) on Amazon. Had a retail car audio shop try and charge me $2,000 for 5 (DE) + 3 (DL) packs and installation so did it myself, discovered they were price gouging and looking for an easy profit. Cost me less than $550. There is nothing "relatively cheaper" that works as well, your results will be exactly what you pay for.

You're not pulling the carpet up, it's attached to the front firewall under the dash somehow. After the center console is completely removed, the carpet will lift like a bathroom tub from one side of the car or the other and you can lay Dyanamat underneath. I had help that day and was still cussing wildly, its a pain.

I was able to cover the following;

Trunk; 100%
Rear quarter panels (wheel wells); 90%
Rear deck lid; 75%
Rear seats; 90%
Front doors; 200%
Front seats; 75%

I have pictures and a write up, just haven't posted them on C5. I know people that have done just the trunk and others who tried to save some pennies using inferior product. They all say the same thing, should have used Dynamat and/or should have done the entire car.

Knuconceptz just released a new deadening material that is thicker than Dynamat by 11% that I am excited about, but I have not called them to discuss or receive a sample yet.

How does this stuff handle curves and corners. What tools did you use?

Ever try to take a piece of paper and wrap it around three corners at once? Does not work well. The first 20 hours I spent trying to cut perfect pieces and making everything look good - waste of time for the most part. The next 20 hours I took the single sheets (18" x 32") and cut it once down the middle (9" x 32") then cut those into 4" wide sections (9" x 4"). Took each section and started throwing them into crevasses at that point. Don't get me wrong, for the large flat parts of the car, easy.

[Enter company here] will try and sell you some special tool or roller to lay the crap in the car with.....really only useful on flat surfaces (not many). Go buy a can of tennis balls (seriously), between the felt surface, air pressure and curvature they are the perfect tool for rubbing the material to the metal of the car.

This is one job you do not rush, will take 30-40 man hours. Time does not cut in half with two people, but it is certainly much easier with two. One person can be cutting sheets while the other is upside down backward preparing for kamasutra reaching for holes.

PM'd you my pictures.

I did my complete unibody from the rear of the front seats back including the compartment floor,
complete inner 1/4 panels, 1/4 wheel housings, rear trunk compartment, etc.
I didn't believe this car had no unibody insulation except a small square at the front of
the wheel housings. This was the first thing I did to me SS 6 years ago. Pretty easy job as
peel and stick Dynamat panels forms into nooks & crannies with your hand.
Do a search under Dynamat or Rammat as a few guys here have done this.

I used Fatmat extreme (rattle trap) on the horizontal surfaces and regular Fatmat on the vertical. I did the whole trunk, under the seats front and back, and forward about to the pedals. I bought 100 ft of the thinner and ~75 ft of the thicker stuff all from Amazon with free shipping for $300. I still have a lot of the sides to do, but all of the floor is done and it made a huge difference. My helpers gave out on me and I had to put the car back together. I had no troubles at all re-installing parts due to the thicker mat as I worried I might. One of the best mods I have done. I will warn that the interior of the car will smell like tar for a few weeks, but a couple good hot sunny days will help it dissipate. I couldn't notice a thing, and neither could my much more sensitive smelling wife after a few weeks. Watch the video on how to remove the seats, especially the rear on YouTube and buy a good roller for the install. The free ones work for maybe 5 minutes! Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the tips! My car is currently down for an engine build so will be parked a while, was thinking now was a time to be able to pick away at it.

I was also wondering how reassembly would go with having put and extra layer down but good to hear it's still all good! Look forward to doing this! If only my 8 month old would give me some time lol.

I covered from the trunk to the edge of the carpet, plus the doors.

I used RAAMmat. Similar to Dynamat, but a bit cheaper. I've used Dynamat in the past as well, and you are at least partially paying for the name and popularity (like those that buy Monster Cables).

Take a look: http://www.raamaudio.com/

The one thing I will say not to use to put it on is your wife’s pamper chief roller, not that it did not work well but when you give it back to her with the black tar like sound deading material on it you might not like her language.
