Can it get too cold to drive the 1le?
Friend of mine who had a 13' Zl1 and I were talking the other day at work, and he was saying once it gets below about 40 degrees we shouldnt drive the car? Or drive it hard? The stock tires could chip or crack? Is this true?

I drive my 1le until first week of November here in NJ when it starts to get about 35 or below. Anything below 30 I would not drive it.

I drove my car when it hit 30 degrees one day but it was only because I had too. Its possible to do just make sure you baby the throttle or else your going to wreck, those tires don't like the cold.

You will have significant traction loss below 40 degrees and severe damage is possible, cracking/tread loss, at 20 degrees. Either get a set of winter tires or put her in hibernation for the winter.

Yes, If you're still driving on the G2's. Because the tires are useless when it gets too cold. I have MRR228's fitted with all season tires so I can drive on nicer days during the cold season.

What about the stock Pzeros? Those are summer tires as well. I'm in Cali so it only gets to about 30 degrees

OP, you're on Hilton Head, only about 1 hour north of us. There are about 4 - 5 days a year where it is too cold (below 40 degrees F) to operate the the Goodyears per their recommendation to avoid the potential cracking / tire damage. If you have to go away from the coast in your travels, that number may go up. I think the traction fears are significantly blown out of proportion. Cold tires on cold roads suck. Use your head and you will be fine.

But seriously, the G2s are just atrocious when the temps drop. You can light them up in 4th gear at 1500 RPM if they haven't warmed up yet. It's just silly dangerous. I mounted my MRR-228s with BFGoodrich g-Force Comp-2 all-seasons this weekend as the cold weather is upon us. MUCH, MUCH safer this morning (and glad I did it this weekend, it was 29 degrees when I left my house this morning). |
