It's nice when your car tells you about your flat tire.

Usually I look at the tire pressure on the DIC before I leave anyway, but the car told me before I could look.

Bad news, roofing nail.

Plug it or boot it? Either method has it's risks. Opinions?

I plugged one of my tires with the intention of having the tire patched. I forgot about it and 1.5 years later and around 12,000 miles when I replaced my rear tires, I thought, ' I was supposed to fix that!' I didn't have any issues. Stupid me, I bought a tire warranty and could have had the tire replaced for free. I forgot...

to plug or not to plug

I would plug it if there is significant tread life left and I use the car for routine daily driving. I would replace it if I track the car regardless of tread life left. just my 2 cents...

After I replaced the rear tire I got this a week later! This time I remembered my warranty, went to the dealership and they replaced my tire!

I can remember way back in the day when it was really hard to know if we had a flat, because our car did not inform us. We would sometimes drive around for weeks with the flat tire... I mean, how were we to know it was flat?

These cars inform us of all kinds of cool things. A few months ago, I was driving along, when my DIC alerted me to the fact that my right- rear taillight was out. I happened to be a few hundred feet from an AutoZone, just barely enough time to hit the brakes, crank the wheel, and thread the needle into the parking lot. Sorry, forgot to signal.

Got out of the car, confirmed the malfunction, and had the offending bulb removed in about a minute. Went inside the store, purchased the replacement, and had it installed in another minute.

No more than five minutes passed from the time I was informed of a malfunction, and the time that I was rolling again, repaired and ready to not get pulled over.

If it's in the tread/road contact area, a plug should do fine. Plus, no possibility of messing up you rims taking the tire off. If it's sidewall (assuming it's a clean puncture)... have it patched.

I don't know what "boot it" means.

I thought I was the only one who did not know what boot it means. I assumed it meant to toss and replace it.

The tire has 5000 miles on it, we wouldn't be having this conversation if the hole was in the sidewall. I would junk it if that happened.

I think I'll just try to plug it, as per Ragner's experience and I don't want to risk somebody dismounting the tire and installing a "tire boot plug" which is basically a flat patch with a rubber stem that you pull through the hole in the tire from the inside.

BTW there is no use in adjusting your tire pressure while watching the TPMS reading on your DIC, it took 2 blocks for the car to figure out the tire had the proper pressure in it again.

I'd plug it and go about your business. Plugs are pretty effective

Yeah... got a nail in one of my NT05's and I just ended up patching since I don't track this car, and the nail was not sidewall. Believe me, it was nerve wrecking having them work around my wheel!
