PWNED! nail in rear sidewall! need new rear tire...

Hey guys! I've been a Camaro5 forum reader for a while now but haven't joined until now, so this is my first post! Wish the circumstances surrounding my post were a little more exciting...

So the obvious next question is, "What rear tire should I buy?" I have the 20" SS/RS wheels from the factory. I know there have been a couple discussions on this but I'm having a hard time just compiling a list (brain fried?).

Yokohama Parada Spec-X (rear) is listed for $150 tirerack.com and that sounds like a deal to me. It would be running with 3 P-Zero's still on the car. I'm definitely NOT a consistently hard driver, so as long as the shoe fits...

Are there any great reasons NOT to buy this tire? What would you buy? Please keep your answers simple as I just a simple-minded fella. If possible provide a link to your recommendation

it would drive me crazy if I was 3 pirelli, 1 other...
i'd put a new pirelli on it, or replace all of em with something new...but that's just me.

You should not mix different tires on the same axle at the very least. You need to eithe just buy a new PZero, or buy two Yokos for the rear. They MUST match in diameter in order for the ABS and Stabilitrak to work properly. BETTER is a matched set of 4. Sorry for the bad news. There is a guy in the Classified's who is (or was) selling a set of the wheels and tires piece by piece, so you might find a deal there. Good luck.

Rob

EDIT to add: I'd actually be surprised if a reputable tire shop would even sell and mount you 1 different tire for an axle.

I agree with the others, either buy 2 new or 1 of stock tires. I personally will not put a Japanese Tire on my American Muscle Car.

That is kind of like putting Soy Sauce on your Hot Dog!

I really hope you're referring to tires that are DIFFERENT sizes. There is absolutely nothing mechanically wrong with putting on two tires of a different brand as long as they are the same size (and performance grade). I'm not one to care about those them matching, so as long as they are both performance tires I'm fine.

Still haven't heard any specific recommendations...

Well let me ask the question I am really suprised no one asked! You are in Michigan? Are you gonna drive this in the snow?/Rain? If so I would look to a better all season tire and I have a separate set of rims with Blizzak on them! it is like glue! but if not get a set of 4 all seasons cause the perrelli will suck in weather after 10k! trust me I had a set of P-zeros

Thanks Solstice - yeah, I live in Michigan 20 min. outside of Detroit. Right now I'm thinking the PARADA Spec-X would be a nice choice. I'm gonna see if my father (an ASE master mechanic) can plug the nail. It's holding air for now so we'll see.. might have dodged a bullet!

Tires from different manufacturers and even different models from the same maker can differ quite a lot while being the same listed "size". Sure, you might end up with tires that are very close to the same actual diameter, but you might not, too. You'd also end up with very different handling properties on each side of the axle, which is not a good thing either. The stock Pirelli tires are way stickier than the Yokos. And softer. I wouldn't do it or let my wife drive it that way.

And you have had several specific recommendations it looks like to me. You asked, "what rear tire should I buy?" Pretty much everyone has said either buy 2 new tires of whatever for that axle or buy 1 new factory replacement tire. If you decide to only buy new rear tires, your options open up a bit because the biggest problem right now is finding full SETS of matching tires in the two factory sizes. For just rears, though, there are quite a few options from the Yokos you mentioned (which I am probably going to buy for my 2LT RS car if I can't find a set of take-off 19"-ers), to Pirelli Skorpion snow & ice tires. Check out tirerack.com and discounttire.com for what is available and reviews. I really like the way tirerack.com rates and reviews the tires they sell.
