I'm still on the fence. On it's face it seems like a good idea. Then I read something about it being a condenser for oil...

After having my heads off twice Id say get one. The first time was with no catch can and the results were bad. The second time was with a catch can but it wasn't as good as advertised. It caught some of the excess oil but still a lot of residue leftover. After emptying my current catch can the first time I had more in it than all the times combined of my previous one.

Catch cans have been used in diesel engines for, well, forever. As much as I pour out of mine after 5000 miles... There's no way I wouldn't have one.

I put a 100% factory stock V8 pushrod engine from 1973 into a car in 1991. The engine had about 200K miles. The engine it replaced was a pushrod V8 made in 1969 and had about 250K miles; the cam was wiped out. The entire car that the 455 was in was 300 bucks, and the upper end work on the 350 was estimated at 600. No contest!

After I put another 85K miles on that '73 engine, I decided to check out the bottom end. The engine ran fine but it was starting to leak oil from the rear main and I had overall low oil pressure so I was wondering about the pickup. Two cracked pistons was what I found. The engine at this time was almost 25 years old and had been in use almost continuously. The engine had also never been opened up before I had it.

A tiny bit of oil mist in the intake charge never bothered that engine; it did not have a short life and the oil mist had nothing to do with the cracked pistons (cracked on the casting lines probably sometime in the 1980s) or the rear main (rope seals get old). It was time for a rebuild and so I rebuilt it.

Catch cans don't hurt. I won't say there's no tech reason behind them. I'm not panicked becasue my LS3 doesn't have one. If I'm "in there" doing something anyway, I'll pick one up and install it.

I have the Elite Catch can now and had an RX, the Elite catches more oil and is easier to empty.
Just wondering what he had and has now.

Well if you think about it engine fuel systems today are a lot different than those made in the 60's and 70's. Those carbureted engines (or for that matter TBI) were flushed with gas and kept cleaner all the way through the intake induction system. With fuel injection we now use much less fuel and its delivered closer to the valves so you get less cleaning from the fuel on the valves and none in the upper parts of the induction system. Anyway on cars with direct injection and no gas to help clean the valves you absolutely need a catch can.
