Oil Pressure?

hey guys. i have a car question for you.

I got my car back from an oil change today. They put 6 liters of synthetic oil in. I notice that when I accelerate from idle that my oil pressure gauge jumps almost to 500 kpa (the highest reading on the gauge). Once I start going a constant speed (like 40 km/h - 80 km/h) it goes back down to around 250 kpa (the middle reading). If I accelerate again it goes up and then comes back down. If I am on the highway and going 100 km/h - 130 km/h the oil pressure gauge reads about 375 kpa (inbetween middle and top reading).

I had never noticed it doing this before, but I wasn't really looking either.

Is this normal? Shouldn't the oil pressure stay constant for the most part when driving? The oil pressure never drops below around 250 kpa. I don't know if this is from the recent oil change or what? Did they not put enough oil in? (I checked the dip stick and it looks fine) Just looking for some insight for you guys that are more "car know" than I.

Thanks.

I'll double check mine tomorrow and confirm for you. I was going "hmm" on my 3.5 hour drive from the dealer this week when I noticed a similar situation. Did a 'lil bit of research, and...

Basically, the pressure is a direct result of the combustion. Higher RPMs is forcing the oil through this system with greater force, so your pressure will go up.

I'm not a mechanical engineer, but it seems to be on par with expected behavior. Anyone else?

i understand that the oil pressure will go up as you work the car's engine works harder.

i'm just wondering if it is supposed to fluctuate that much and go that high?

Hows the oil look on the dipstick when you pull it out? Does it seem like the correct weight?

I know with our G8 it fluctuates but it never pegs out.... we need someone to go check their car!

FWIW mine is pretty similar. When the engine is cold, any time the car accelerates or I even touch the gas the oil pressure pegs. Even after it warms up, it's very common (at least in my car!) for the needle to bury itself under acceleration....

Not sure if it's expected or not, but seems common in my car....

$19.97 for the GTX @ Wal Mart and 8.95 for the cartridge at Lordco. Better than having some rookie lean all over my fenders. See if this changes any readings before GM monkies with it.

Absolutely normal, The oil pressure is a direct reflection of revolutions of the oil pump. RPM of the crankshaft increases, so does the oil pump resulting in higher oil pressure. Yuo should see some Harleys oil pressure at idle, almost 0.

There probably is a "high Pressure relief valve" to prevnt excessive pressure. Also there are 3 dual jets that squirt oil against the bottom of the pistons to keep them cool, which may require higher pressures.

Have you checked the oil level? I believe the LS3 takes 8 qts with filter change.
