Those who installed an MGW yourself... Did you lower the Trans?

Is it really necessary?the entire process of installing the mgw seems doable, with the exception of lowering that Trans. That part has me nervous. When I installed my hurst, it said to lower the cross member for the Trans, but I didn't even do that. I'm about to bite the bullet and order the mgw.

Any tips or suggestions for the install. It definitely looks more involved than the hurst, but doesn't necessarily look harder.

Nope didn't lower the trans, but I am a V6 car so I am not sure if the 6060 has less room than my AY6. Just followed the video and it went smoothly. Have driven quite a few different performance manuals and the MGW is one of my favorite shifters.

Hmm ok. I would imagine the v8 Trans has more but to it. But in theory it seems super simple to reach up there, release the clip, pull the bolt out, and reverse. That's really the only part that's got me worried. The rest can be harder than getting the stupid screws in for the hurst in that tight area

I lowered the trans, it was much easier getting things up/down from there. If I recall, it's very difficult/you can't get the stock shifter out of there without lowering the transmission

Please tell me it's not as bad as it sounds.... The video shows the brace and a few bolts in the center of that loosened. But I don't have a pole jack to ease it down and back up. And I would be doing this on the ground.

But I really don't wanna pay someone to do it. I love doing stuff myself.

It was pretty easy, I was doing mine on a lift and had one of those large pyramid lift stand things.

In hindsight it may be ok without one, the driveshaft held it up ok

Oh boy. That does not sound like something I want to do anymore. I really don't wanna screw something up. I'm scared.

Yes I did. You have to lower than trans to get the shifter body out. It's really really simple. I did my install on jackstands and lifted and lowered the trans with a 2 ton floor jack. Followed the MGW video step by step.

Problems I had, the linkage pin didn't fit well and had to be forced into the shifter shaft. The bolt/screw things, didn't have enough room to back out, was a pain.

Well worth the time and money.

i did it on a lift and didn't use a jack on the trans.
the original mgw video never mentioned holding up the trans, so i didn't. the motor and driveshaft held it up fine.
if you're worried, buy an extra cheap jack. an extra jack comes in handy a lot.

Well if I put the car on ramps, and the rear end on stands, I can use my jack on the Trans.

if you're gonna put the front on ramps and jack the rear, make sure you chock the rear of the front wheels.
I like a spare set of jack stands under it too.

i lowered the trans slightly for mine, made it possible to get the pins out of the trans for the mount. i just put the car on jack stands and used my floor jack to slowly lower the trans until i could get access. without lowering it the pins didn't fit out in that part of the trans tunnel for me.

I lowered mine when I did it. I had my car up on ramps and went and bought a trans jack for under $100. Being on the floor was a bit of a pain but it is doable. The hardest part I had was with the clips that hold the arms of the shifter on. Those were the biggest PIA.

I lowered my trans crossmember when I installed my hurst short throw shifter.

It's a pain to get around the TR-6060, so I'd recommend lowering it a little.
